That’s a tough one, and I can only express my opinion for the WORST prom song ever.
“Almost Paradise,” from the Footloose soundtrack. That was my 1984 senior prom song, and I about threw up in my mouth when they played it.
Uh oh, I think I’m going to be sick again.
Are you knocking on Heaven’s door?
Also up for worst song: i had the time of my life from dirty dancing.
nobody puts baby in a corner!!!
“Enter the Sandman”
Dude! “Enter Sandman”, not Enter THE Sandman –
Plus wasn’t that song “post prom” for you? Were you hitting on high school chicks in college?
Anyway – careless whisper by george michael gets my vote.
Good catch (x2).
It was more an apocryphal reference to how I felt about high school
song from the year my class planned prom- Stand By Me. I still like it!
For my money, it doesn’t get any better than “Betty Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes.
Bette Davis Eyes as performed by Buckwheat.
+1
Miles Runs the Voodoo Down by Miles Davis.
The administration wouldn’t let us have “Time in a Bottle” because they were convinced it was about alcohol.
My school wouldn’t let us have a prom … because dancing would lead to unclean thoughts. However, if we’d had one, my classmates would have chosen Journey’s “Open Arms” as the best sappy song of the year. Horrors.
Time of My Life by Greenday
Not sure it is the best, but quite popular!
You mean Good Riddance? That’s kind of funny because that’s a break up song!
Boyz II Men’s End of the Road
Push It by Salt n Pepa
Oh, and, for the gropey slow dance: Take My Breath Away by Berlin
Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi. I can still recall the way my date’s hands brushed against my thick mullet as we danced to that song back in 1989.
Ours was Forever Young by Alphaville. And it was NOT the year that song came out.
Love that one! Definitely one of our prom songs! Along with Time After Time…Cyndi Lauper
Ohhhh, there were SO many! “Lady (Ya Bring Me Up)” – the Commodores…”Whip It” – Devo…”Celebrate” – Kool & The Gang…”Rock Lobster” – The B-52’s…
Some really bad ones, too…don’t wanna name ’em, or I’ll get earworms for sure! (OK, just one: “Angel of the Morning” – can’t recall the artist, but GADS, what an awful song…)
that would be juice newton..
Going back to 1968, it was a big hit for Marilee Rush. It was a fairly brave song in its day, reminiscent of The Shirelles’ phenomenal Will You Love Me Tomorrow from earlier in the decade.
I remember dancing at the prom to Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly With His Song, a great sloooooow number. Wow, I sound really old.
Angel of the Morning was written by Angela Jolie’s uncle Chip Taylor, who also gave us Wild Thing.
Something by Rush.
At least, that’s what it would have been for me in my high school days.
Sure, but at the prom? 2112 Overture? Tom Sawyer? Spirit of Radio? I don’t see many of those happening in the high school gym.
Styx, “The Best of Times.”
Stairway to Heaven. Always a classic
The Twelfth Of Never
(originally) by Johnny Mathis
Covered by many including Cliff Richard, Roger Miller, Donny Osmond, Olivia Newton-John and Elvis Presley.
Gotta be “Mony, Mony.”
After the lyrics “Here she comes now saying Mony, Mony,” the cheerleaders at my school would yell “Hey, do you wanna get laid, get ed.” Yes, really.
Things just went downhill from there.
That second “ed” was supposed to read (explitive)ed.
Kind of takes something away from the story having to explain it …
Gotta steal it from “Pretty in Pink”-“If You Leave” by OMD will always make me think of prom.
Great one! I also liked Chris de Burgh’s Lady in Red.
the 80s rocked.
I think we had live music at our prom and god knows it wasn’t memorable. But if I think about the best music of those prom years it would have to be Brown Sugar for the rocker and Betcha By Golly Wow (Stylistics) for the vertical grind.
Brick House
!
Don’t Forget About Me by Simple Minds.
Breakfast Club
Seriously??? We made it this far without Open Arms by Journey getting mentioned? Wait…. maybe that was couples skate.
Gotta put Benny Mardones’ Into The Night on the list!
Need You Tonight – INXS
“Like A Virgin” – ironic then, just ridiculous now! 😉
REO Speedwagon’s “Fight this feeling”
Dalton Junior High School, 1986.

Watching the video makes me question just what in the hell they are talking about, but at the time it seemed to encompass my soul’s yearning, burning, churning and, uh, slurning.
We were aiming to go retro with Alphaville’s Forever Young…but unfortunately it turned out to be the hideous Rod Stewart song. Soooo not the same thing!
A personal fav from 1992- Baby Got Back– Sir Mix-A-Lot. I still love this one!
I don’t remember my actual prom song, but I do remember there was a huge controversy because one (very hip) girl wanted it to be Prince’s “Erotic City.” I was shocked, SHOCKED, at the time but now I think it would be cool.
