“New Orleans-Style Snowball Cafe” Coming to Cafe Cliche Space
Decatur Metro | May 27, 2010Ms. Lauren Lee writes in…
We just met the two people that plan to open up a “New Orleans style snow ball cafe” where Cafe Cliche used to be. They said they hope to have a soft launch by June 17, and a grand opening in July.
Yum…shaved ice…

should be great!
Is it the same folks who run the snow-ball truck?
Nope, this is their first shot at the snowball business.
On the one hand, I’m thrilled that another business is moving into that space. On the other, I’m kinda worried that, unless they just got a smoking deal on rent, they’re gonna have to sell a LOT of snowballs to be able to pay it. Maybe they’ll sell something else, too– something that will be in demand all year ’round, instead of just the hot months…*fingers crossed*
hi, if I’m not mistaken and this the snowball joint you’re talking about that is opening this Thursday, well:
I’m the niece of the co-owner, Vicki Sanders, and she plans to sell snowballs but also T-Shirts, New-Orleans-themed accessories, and southern-style food. Our family, including her, were born and raised in New Orleans, so yes, haha, she does know what she’s doing. ^-^
I’m slightly worried however, because I see a lot of New Orleans snowball joints for some reason; there’s one right by my house. (Any comments on …?)
I’ve lived placed with snowball shops that did great!
And did these places have, oh, I dunno… Winter?
I’m glad something is moving into that space, and I really and truly hope they succeed. But you do have to wonder at the judgment of someone who wants to run a year-round snowball shop in a city where we regularly have ice storms or, at the very least, frigid temperatures for three or four months out of the year. There’s a reason most snowball purveyors operate out of mobile stands. It’s a seasonal business. Even established franchises like Bruster’s and Rita’s have the good sense to close up shop in the late fall/winter or alter their menu to include stuff like hot desserts. Hopefully the operator of this business will consider the latter. Otherwise, I can’t see how they will avoid a serious crash in traffic in the fall and winter months.
But the ice is cheaper in winter. Maybe that will offset any decline in business.
I am now motivated to open a snow ball / soup shop in downtown Decatur.
This is actually an great idea! We need a soup shop too!
hahaha :]
Hahahaha, optimistic are we?
She’s going to sell warm treats for the cooler seasons, such as brownies and hot chocolate. You can email me at for more information.
Where is this Cafe Cliche space??
Next to the new Garlic Thai (where the old Little Azio’s used to be). On Ponce next to Decatur CD.
330 West Ponce de Leon Ave. Sorry about that Helen. Should have given an address.
Will be interesting to see how this compares with the just-opened SunO concept just outside Decatur (a space previously occupied by about half a dozen ice cream shops).
New Orleans snowballs are awesome. Im predicting a big success and I wish them luck!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, and be sure to stop by :]

Snoball + Soft Serve = Stuff Snoball
Glad to have some new neighbors.
i think decatur should have a bagel shop. maybe it could be a snoball/bagel place. there really isn’t a NY style bagel shop on our side of town aside from various restaurants that will serve bagels. bring NY bagels to decatur!
Agree that a NY style fresh bagel place could do well.
Before Cafe Lily , we had a gelato / NY bagel shop in that space. The bagels were flown in from NY several time per week. The gelato wasn’t bad either. Unfortunately the owner was the least hospitable business owner ever. I think he lasted 6 months……..
And the moral to this story is: a NY-style bagel will work, but a NY-style owner won’t.
No sorry , won’t go with that . I am from there. Won’t buy into that stereotype. This guy was just rude and obnoxious. People like him exist in every region of the country.
That gelato was delicious and I couldn’t figure out why the place didn’t make it. But I didn’t even know about the bagels! So, that business just wasn’t up to its good products. I think a well-run authentic bagel place would make a killing. Our family alone could keep them in business, especially if they stocked the basic varieties–sesame, poppyseed, and plain–as well as our favorites–cranberry, asiago cheese, and honey wheat. Anyone taking notes…..?!
With lox cream cheese, please!
Sure am! I’m the niece of the co-owner; I’ll be sure to let her know. :] thanks!
Just ate at New Orleans Snowball Cafe and it was so good. The prices are great and the owners are incredibly nice. We will be back. They also said that they will offer muffaletta sandwiches in the cooler months (they currently sell the muffaletta olive mix – straight from New Orleans). Best part for parents – kids under 4 years old get a free snowball!!
I went on Saturday and I’m going back tonight. Delicious, soft snowy ice that tastes like heaven.
