Blue Elephant Book Shop Moving To West Ponce
Decatur Metro | May 4, 2010UPDATE: Teresa at Blue Elephant tells us that while the shop will indeed open June 1st, the “Grand Opening” will take place Saturday, June 5th.
“Low-catur”, as it was recently called in a comment, just keeps on gettin’ better!
According to an email just sent out to patrons, the Blue Elephant Book Shop is moving from the Publix plaza just north of Decatur into the old “So Rare” space across from Watershed and Farm Burger at 407 West Ponce.

Dear One and All,
We have some big news for you from Blue Elephant Book Shop. As of June 1, we will be in a new space. The lease is signed, renovations are underway, and–although we are confident that this is a good move–fingernail-chewing has begun in earnest. Our new address is 407 W. Ponce de Leon Ave, Decatur, 30030, so we will be about 1 mile from where we are now. The space is smaller than our present space and will have a cosier look, but will still have our individual imprint and friendly, expert staff. For those with local knowledge, the landmarks are two doors west of Taqueria del Sol, two doors east of Dancing Goats, and directly across the street from Watershed.

Good news! I was just there today, grumbling to myself about that left turn out of the parking lot onto Clairemont, wishing there were such a shop in Decatur.
You actually ATTEMPT that left turn? I always exit that parking lot onto N. Decatur over by the Publix exits, where there’s a light and the traffic isn’t so bad.
I sat there with my left-turn blinker on for several minutes, then gave up and turned right, and cut through on Superior (and before any Great Lakes residents get up in arms, I drove slowly through the residential area!). I don’t go to that strip-mall very often, so I forgot how hard that turn is!
Congrats on the move! I walk by that location all the time and am WAY more likely to visit the new location. Best of luck with your move!
I love it! I’ve never visited the current location, but I certainly will this one. Will be there opening day in fact.

So, maybe someone can clue me in. What exactly is Blue Elephant book shop? It’s always looked a little odd to me, sort of like a blockbuster from the outside. Is it just a book shop like any other, or do they have some unique characteristics?
It’s a smallish, but very nicely curated independent bookstore. The current location has lots of seating (presumably for browsers), and a good kids’ book section (although obviously not as comprehensive as LSOS). They had the book I was looking for, and several well-put-together displays of similarly-themed items (local interest, vampire novels, etc.).

Blue Elephant is that rare breed of animal–a general independent book shop. We try to have a wide variety of new releases and back stock. If we could be said to have a specialty, it would be mysteries, just because there are several of us here who love mysteries.
