Decatur Farmers Market Adding Saturday Market in Downtown Decatur
Decatur Metro | March 15, 2010 | 1:12 pmVery exciting news! Check this out! Nicole sends along this press release…
SATURDAY FARMERS MARKET LAUNCHING IN DOWNTOWN DECATUR
The City of Decatur, GA will soon have a Farmers Market on Saturday, in addition to the existing Wednesday Market. The Saturday Farmers Market will start on May 15, 2010 with a grand opening event featuring live music, a children’s area and breakfast goodies from 9-12noon in its second location at the corner of Trinity and McDonough, centrally located in downtown Decatur.
It will run every Saturday morning year-round, with plenty of free parking and a short walk from the Marta and Decatur Square.
Every Saturday – Summer 9a.m – - 12 p.m.
Location: 500 block at North McDonough Street and Trinity Street
I’m trying to determine whether by “Trinity and McDonough” they mean the Maloof parking lot or the grounds of the new DeKalb Courthouse. Streetview of the intersection after the jump.
The last time we talked about this, and some residents questioned the location and timing of the Decatur Farmers Market, there were mixed feelings on both aspects. One issue brought up regarding the timing was that Decatur didn’t want to compete with Morningside for farmers on Saturday mornings. I’ve asked the press contact about this concern. We’ll see what they say.
Regardless, I don’t really care. This is freakin’ great!

Awesome! I usually missed the Wednesday market because of traffic from work, but loved when I could make it. I’ll definitely be taking advantage of the Saturday hours.
This is extremely exciting. We frequent the existing Decatur Farmer’s Market when we can, but since my wife began grad school (I work in Sandy Springs, making it generally impossible to get there), we haven’t been able to make it much. We will DEFINITELY partake of the Saturday market.
It’s unclear above whether this is run by the same people that run the Wed. market. I’m guessing it’s not.
Lump, I believe it is the same folks. I cut off the part of the press release which restated the Wednesday hours and location.
I’m beside myself with glee about this. I have a feeling that this is gonna be like a mini-festival every Saturday morning.
That makes it even better news, since I didn’t want it competing with the originators of the Wed. market. It also means we’ll likely see a lot of the same vendors that we patronize there. Woo!
I guess this also implies that the Wed. Decatur Farmer’s Market has been a success. Empirical evidence seemed to indicate as much, as many things (eggs, milk) seemed to sell out within the first 30 mins to an hour. So if you didn’t get there by 3:30 (4:30 in the summer) or so, you were likely SOL on a lot of stuff.
So this really solidifies my choice for the Decatur slogan, right?
Decatur: There is a festival for that
Great news!! I love the Wed market but often can not get there on time either. Sat AM is PERFECT!!!
Thanks to who ever put this together!!
If only we had one in Oakhurst. Yes, I know about the one in East Lake. Not sure if it’s coming back. The sign looked quite bedraggled when I drove by the other day. I think it would do better if they set up in Navo’s parking lot.
East Lake is coming back – they just got on twitter and have been talking about new vendors. Very exciting to have both!
the East Lake will be back. they are polling to see what people think of Sunday dusk-dark as an alternative to Saturday morning, since there are so many mkts in that time slot. I imagine the competition to sign up growers is pretty stiff on SAturday mornings. As cool as the new Sat market in downtown Decatur sounds, I can’t help but wonder if they’re scooping growers away from the smaller-for-now East Lake gig. That would be really frustrating for those of us on the south side of town!
Since it’s East Lake residents who’ve done the incredible amount of work to organize it in the first place, I doubt if they’d be interested in relocating to the NAVO lot (even if it were available). Where they are now serves the south side of Decatur along with East Lake and Kirkwood.
Great news. I would love for Decatur to a combo farmers market/”upscale” flea market like Eastern Market in DC.
I loved Eastern Market! Great bread, pasta, crabcake sandwiches, desserts…mmm. Also lots of great art pieces and crafts.
This is indeed good news. I also often miss the Wed market for the same reasons already mentioned. Sat market will be great!
Thrilled! Thanks to those responsible!
Yay!!!
That is all.
YEA!!
Wow, will be able to participate more regularly now! Great news…
