AT&T To Offer Super Fast Internet in Decatur

    Decatur Metro | October 14, 2014 | 9:47 am

An AJC article this morning about an announcement from AT&T that they will be offering “super fast internet” to Atlanta specifically mentions Decatur…

AT&T said Tuesday that it will bring super fast Internet connections to Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Decatur and Newnan, giving metro Atlanta the first broad commitment for to offer residents and small businesses speeds 100 times faster than the average for American homes.

According to the AJC, AT&T provided no additional details regarding “when?” or “how much?”

As many know, Google started this race early this year when it announced that Atlanta cities – including Decatur – would be evaluated for Google Fiber, the company’s ultra-fast internet service.  Google still hasn’t announced any decisions, though the AJC post reports that they had previously said that they would make a decision by year’s end.

We’ll check with the city to see if they have any updates about Fiber, given this development.

It will be a lot slower than Google Fiber.

In measurements made between April and June 2013 (Q2), the United States ranked 8th out of 55 countries with an average connection speed of 8.7 Mbit/s

100 times faster equates to 108.75 megabytes

AT&T is scared. They did the same thing in Texas when Google came to town. It’s happening.

Well the good news is that consumers will benefit from a little healthy competition.

You say that as if there is bad news. As if I should feel bad for AT&T and Comcast for the long-awaited undercutting of their stranglehold on the marketplace? Sorry, but no. I for one welcome our new broadband overlords.

(cut to two years hence) DAMMIT, GOOGLE!!!!!!

And yes, I realize I totally set you up as a straw man there… 😉
