Roly Poly Vacates Church Street Building. Will it Relocate?

    Decatur Metro | January 26, 2010 | 10:04 am

I’ve received two reports in the last forty-eight hours that the little Roly Poly building on the edge of the cemetery at 811 Church Street has finally been vacated.

We’ve been anticipating this since August 2008, when the city purchased the building so it could be razed to increase the width of the cemetery’s Church Street entrance.

The only question remaining is whether Roly Poly will reopen elsewhere.  Lyn Menne reports that last she heard they wouldn’t.  However, a note on the Roly Poly website states “Relocating. Reopening Feb 2010″.

    Only time will tell!

Last I’d heard last year they were looking at the former My Thai space. Not sure they ever signed a lease, though.

I hope they relocate. I liked going there every now and then.

They had some nice, healthy choices and their stuff was tasty. I’ll miss them if they’re gone.

      Can anyone say “Little Azio”?

I would have to bet that the rent in the Little Azio space is significantly higher than what Roly Poly has been paying. Much larger too.

Not that that building is an architectural gem, but is the cemetery entrance really so used that the city would need to raze buildings to widen/create roads?

Not sure I agree this is the best use of tax dollars…but admittedly, I don’t know all the facts…

Of course. People are just dying to get in there.

Agreed. What possible need could there be for a wider road into the cemetery?

Bell Street is quite a busy road. I worked for a while at the Art Shack–the little wooden house adjacent to the cemetery–and was surprised at the amount of funeral traffic.

Something that never goes out of business, not even in a bad economy…death!

Bell st may be busy, but I’m just not sold that it is soooooo busy that the city must widen the entrance, spend tax dollars on new asphalt and curb/’gutter, and displace a business while tearing down a building. Like I said, I know this isnt the best building in the world, but to me this stinks of 60′s/70′s ideology of “displacement of people and business for more auto mobility”..or just a grander entrance…

I know this is a small instance, but a lot of small instances add up to a Commerce dr situation (Next time you drive down Commerce think of the lane you are driving in is literally located where people’s living rooms used to be!)

Just not sold this is the highest and best use of tax dollars.

Again, though, I have not heard a real explination of why this is necessary. Someone obviously feels it is…there must be a traffic count out there somewhere proving that taking another nick out of the street character is necessary (yes, I think that building adds more to the character of the street than a turn lane or mega cemetary entrance…)

Land, the cemetery work is being done with money from the bond issue and is part of the cemetery master plan approved last year. The cemetery office (little brick building) is also being completely renovated as a part of the project.

As for a business being displaced, the Roly-Poly was a “willing seller”.

As for the appearance of the finished product, I suggest that you withhold judgment until we see the final product.

The cemetery is also historic and preservation and public accessibility of such gems is really not a bad thing.

eh…still not sold, the plan shows more trees, which is great…but…and its already accessable…not sure a wider entrance enhances anything.

and I’m not debating wheather or not the preservation of the office, or other historical aspects, or the overall final plan…I think its all great too! Obviously I like preservation if I’m debating the tearing down of the silly Roly Poly building! ;)

To me its all part of the framework of the city…however small…

I am not positive on this but had heard that they are relocating to the Los Luros shopping Center at the corner of Clairmont and N. Decatur.

That would be Los Loros, right, although Los Luros has kind of a risque sound to it.

So much for grabbing a few delicious sandwiches on the way out after feeding the ducks with the kids. Loved that place.
