DHS Close Up Club Does Good on MLK Service Day
Decatur Metro | January 18, 2010 | 5:02 pmDHS teacher Chris Billingsley writes in (with pics!)…
More than twenty five DHS students from the 9th grade and the Close Up Club participated in the City of Decatur MLK service day. I was a little concerned that only four students had arrived by 8:20 but we had a full team by 8:45. Close Up parents Stan and Laura Metz not only acted as chaperons but worked as hard as the students. We worked for Ms. A.J. on Olympia Place. The students worked very hard from 9:30 to 12:30. We were able to clean the entire property- front, both sides, and back yard. I think the students made a difference in the life of Ms. A.J. When we were finished, she spoke from the heart about how thankful she was that students would give up their holiday for her. I am very proud of all the DHS students who participated in today’s effort. I still find it hard to believe that so much stuff was moved to the curb.
The DHS Close Up Club is looking for additional fund raising projects to help pay for out April trip to Washington, D.C. Please contact me at cbillingsley@csdecatur if you have a Decatur area restaurant or business that could use our help. This might be a “DHS Close Up Night At (name of restaurant)” or students providing some sort of service for a business. For any of these projects, a business would not owe the club anything but if you see an increase in business for that night, you might consider making a donation for our trip. Thanks!
Wonderful pictures. Wonderfully taken pictures too. Did I see bamboo stalks in the back yard?
Nice job, students! We are proud of you.
Good for them!
Thank you, students and thank you, Mr. Billingsley! Keep up the great work.
About 25 members of Youth Leadership Dekalb came out to help too! They bagged up a lot of leaves and cleared a lot of invasive plants. Great job by the kids and by the MLK Service Day organizers!
