Does anyone know what the siding material is they’re using on the new high school additions (and was also used on the press box of the new stadium)? It looks like vinyl but I thought those additions were going after some level of LEED certification. Anyone?
Last concert on the square tomorrow night! Let’s hope it doesn’t get rained out.
Don’t forget the cleanup day tomorrow from 9:30 am to 12 pm at the Oakhurst Dog Park.
More events also listed on thedecaturminute.com!
I am working on the weather so it should be a pretty weekend
What happened to the Decatur Blog links that were on the side of Decatur Metro? You seem to have room under the post calendar. Any chance of getting them back?
They’re over in the right sidebar now. –> (But FYI…they’ll be moving back to the left in the near future.)
Sorry for the recent changes in layout everyone, but we’re almost there.
Unless it was a mirage I saw a coyote run across Church Street near the pool about 12:00 today headed for the park.
Glad he wasn’t around to find Hooty before we did.
Interesting about the coyote! On my early morning jogs on Mondays I have often noticed trash bags left out overnight on Forkner that have been completely ripped to shreds. I’ve told my husband it’s such a big mess that it would have to be a big dog, and I don’t really think there are many big, unleashed dogs in the area. I have reluctantly let myself wonder if there was something else in the area. Otherwise could just be raccoons.
Did anyone hear about a pedestrian hit on the corner of North Decatur and Clairmont very early Wednesday morning? A friend of mine saw the accident and is trying to find out if she’s OK. Thanks, Rachel
Too bad. That’s a bad corner. Used to try that corner with a stroller back when that intersection had more going on than downtown Decatur. Gave up quickly.
Hey y’all
Don’t forget the Decatur Garden Tour is this weekend 10-5 Sat & Sun
All proceeds benefit the Oakhurst Community Garden and Decatur Preservation Alliance.
Go to: http://www.decaturgardentour.com for complete information and maps of all the gardens.
I’ve got a question…
Is anyone else frustrated with the seeming randomness of the Decatur trash pick-up? I understand the “pay-as-you-throw” approach and the corresponding colored bags, but what is one to do with the larger, non bag-fitting items that need to be discarded from time to time. Sometimes the trash collectors will take them, other times they will not. Case in point – I have a plastic trash can that has seen better days. For the past two weeks I have placed the can on the curb with a large, taped note indicating that the can itself is trash and requesting that it be discarded or recycled. It has been left both weeks. At the same time, a neighbor left a bathroom cabinet for disposal and this was taken.
What gives?
I don’t know all the detailed rules either, so I never know what will will be taken and what won’t.
As for the trash can you want to get rid of, I had that dilemma once. So I got out my box cutter, cut it into pieces and put the pieces in my recycling bin. They took it.
P.S. Careful with that box cutter…they can be dangerous.
The Decatur Sanitation folks will come by and pick up anything they’ve missed – just call or email them – they’re generally very responsive.
Lovely grammar on my part. When one poses a question, it should be followed by the correct punctuation. What I meant to say was “I understand the “pay-as-you-throw” approach and the corresponding colored bags, but what is one to do with the larger, non bag-fitting items that need to be discarded from time to time?”
I think you have to hang on to such things until the periodic trash amnesty days. Your neighbor’s cabinets may have disappeared with the aid of folks looking for cabinets… You never know what people will stop and take.
For such items we use the big blue trash bags and cut them down the middle so that they can be used as a wrapping paper of sorts. For instance, we had to get rid of a couch this year and were able to successfully wrap it with 7 Decatur large blue trash bags. Wrap items at the curb so you don’t have to move them after wrapping. Another tip is to put out any such large items on the curb Tuesday afternoon, after trash pickup, so that it has a good week to sit around and find a new owner before you have to wrap it–no need to spend the time and money wrapping it if someone else wants it.
You don’t need to do anything so elaborate to get things picked up. Just call the City sanitation folks and let them know it needs to be picked up.
This has been my experience as well. I had a couple thousand pounds of rotted, tar-soaked railroad ties that we emailed the city about. They said just stack ‘em on the street next to the curb, which we did, and they sent a crew with a special truck to pick them up.
Does anyone care to comment on the substantive, policy differences between Patti Garrett and Kyle Williams? I’ve looked at literature from both of them, and I can’t seem to get past the platitudes about safe neighborhoods, green policies, and fiscal commonsense. Do they actually differ in some serious way? I’m definitely not soliciting unhelpful invective here, I actually would like to know how their approaches differ.
Great question, Paula. I’d love to hear what people think on this.
And are those Patti Garrett’s light blue background/white lettering yard signs? If so, they are REALLY hard to read when you’re driving by.
Agree! They’re very hard to read– I wouldn’t have chosen a light-on-light word/background color scheme. Those signs can be expensive, especially if they end up not being very effective at getting her name out there.
Agree that Patti’s signs are hard to read, yet we all seem to have noticed them. Interesting….
Don’t forget what a small town this is, and how accessible people are! I guarantee you that both candidates would welcome a chance to talk or correspond with you directly and field any questions you have. Then you can make up your own mind. Also, there is usually at least one candidates’ forum held in the fall before the election.
Not to give anything away, but I’ve got a plan in the works that hopefully will provide you with a bit more clarity Paula. Stay tuned.
That’s not to say that knocking on the candidates’ doors around 6:30am for a meet-and-greet isn’t also a fab idea.
Hmmmmm….could our intrepid host be thinking along the lines of an online “debate” between the candidates???
Does anyone know if the Garden Tour or the dog event in Oakhurst is being rescheduled? I had to convert my car into a boat to get home yesterday evening.
An “Online debate” is really a great idea. (is this thread still open?)
I’d rather get up in front of a huge audience of PhD critics than debate in front of this crowd! This posters on this blog are as tough an audience as any anywhere! No matter which candidate, he/she better be prepared for some heavy duty blasts, even if Decatur Metro tries to keep things civil. Reminds me of how my son described his 4th grade teacher–funny but mean.
Oh, my, Snowflake! You don’t spend much time on the political blogs, do you? Or the AJC’s opinion blogs (both progressive & conservative)? I can guarantee you, we’re a bunch of pussycats in comparison. That ain’t no exaggeration, neither!
Oops! Mayhap I should’ve spelt the “P-Word” phonetically?
IMHO, DM posters are definitely a lot wittier! I don’t even read most newspaper blogs, the stuff is so predictable. By the way, I thought that “funny but mean” teacher was a fantastic educator. She kept the kids on their toes, either laughing or putting their noses to the grindstone.
No kidding, Snowflake. While a number of DM posters (myself included) sometimes get caught up emotionally in a subject, we at least try to remain civil and DM rarely needs to moderate/edit. But I just can’t read open news blogs; the vitriol and hatred from so many angry people on all sides is impossible to wade through. This is probably one of the reasons CL chose DM as its favorite local blog. Ouch! I just hurt my arm patting all of us on the back.
