Guns & Turkey Sandwiches
Decatur Metro | May 7, 2009
A once conflicted journalist
Only a year-ago, carrying and eating these two things on MARTA would have been inconceivable. (I guess its still inconceivable to consume and digest a gun.)
Ten months ago, it seemed entirely odd that you could do one but not the other, as brilliantly illustrated by Andisheh in his definitive CL article…
“So I just want to be clear,” I asked MARTA police Chief Wanda Dunham. “If I had a turkey sandwich in one hand and a gun in the other hand, MARTA police would ticket me for the turkey sandwich?”
“If you’re eating it,” she replied. “Only if you’re eating it.”
Genius! Evidenced by the fact that I still remembered the quote 10 months later.
But fear not sweet Andy. Let these ironies plague you no more!
With the signage of a recent bill, MARTA now has the authorization to sell food and drinks in their stations, thereby resolving this irony that has hounded you like a cat-loving dog for far too long.
Ah, sweet relief.

Oh good, I was just thinking the other day that I haven’t been presented with enough opportunities to sit in the sticky remainder of a cherry coke on the train…
It’s another big victory for the NRA. http://tr.im/kKFP
And thank you for the very kind words.
So if I have a gun and you have a turkey sandwich, I can have your turkey sandwich too.
Is the several million dollars in extra revenue to MARTA due to the fact it will receive rent/commission from the food vendor, or is it because MARTA will have staff next to the food stand ready to fine people for eating the sandwich they just purchased on the premises?
I guess I’m missing the point – or is it that we can in start to dine in the delightful environment that is a MARTA train?
How about we crank up the old Pullman Car factory to make some new fine dining cars and insert them into our MARTA trains, and run a trolley line to the factory, of course, and if this thing takes off, we’ll need to add an expansion to the factory, which of course will be an international style steel and glass modern thing attached to the classical brick buildings. This will keep us all busy on all of the recent threads for days.
A dining train to Savannah would suit me just fine.
Confession: while I don’t bring guns onto MARTA, I occasionally bring a little bag of pretzels and snack on them on the way home after working out. Breaking the law keeps me from getting the glucose-deprivation jitters.
I think I read somewhere that you will be able to eat and drink in the stations but not on the trains or busses. That shouldn’t be a problem, though, given the usual long waits.
“…hounded you like a cat-loving dog” ? how’s that??
Oh, and the pics from that article are also unforgettable.
Geez…you and I sure are doing a lot of back-and-forth back-patting today.
Get a room, you two.
Hey, it could happen:

I wouldn’t call that a crime, unless you are the one applying deodorant at the same time.
Of all the high-speed rail options, I would personally be the most excited about one that went to the GA coast.
While I realize the business travel benefits to connecting to D.C., on a purely selfish level a 2 hour ride to the coast would be freakin’ awesome.
100% agreed. I just look at that map and daydream about a quick jaunt down to the Ga. coast. High-speed rail to New Orleans too amazing to contemplate. Or quick trip to Greenville, even, where we used to live. Hopefully someday.
