The Myopic Musings Of a House Majority Leader

    Decatur Metro | April 9, 2009

Don’t you just hate it when the government spends time and money on things you don’t personally use?  Well then you’ve got a friend in House Majority Leader Jerry Keen of St. Simons Island!

Apparently, ol’ Jerry Keen’s the fellow that deemed MARTA unimportant since he lives closer to Disney World than Atlanta and therefore only rides MARTA occasionally.  (Does “occasionally” ever mean “never?”)

    Wow, what an expansive point-of-view!

Come to think of it, I can’t remember the last time I used that enormous bridge to your isle o’ retirement Mr. Majority Leader.

The next time its in need of repair or maintenance, remind me to send a little note of protest to the GDOT or the State Authority of Asphalt or whomever controls the pile of road-money stating my snide disapproval.

I thought all these old rubes hated carpetbaggers?

Is that the bridge that was replaced near Brunswick that was destroyed when the big tanker hit it? Can’t tell from the photo.

SAAC, I believe its the FJ Torres Causeway, which is the bridge you describe.

      Thanks, DM, well put.

The Atlanta metro and MARTA are wildly under-valued and under-funded by the state, especially when their contribution to the coffers is considered. Sadly, it seems to correctly reflect the views of the angry parochial state government.

ARC just voted to bail out the State Legislature by agreeing to a framework to spend up to $25 million of the remaining federal stimulus money to plug MARTA’s operating shortfall. Some good news for once. Way to go ARC!

You know, I believe that I live closer to Dollywood than I do that bridge. Plus, I’ve NEVER been to St. Simon’s… so I’ve never used it.

I actually used that bridge two years ago….I’m so ashamed….

I used to work in Brunswick and in Keen’s “defense” he really doesn’t show much support to Brunswick, which he represents – ya know since its poorer and blacker than St Simons. He really is a world class fool – probably how he’s gone so for in the GOP

An idiot is an idiot regardless of their declared political affiliation Baslim. I think both parties have their fair share both at the state and national level.

      Word!

Sorry, last thing I wanted to do was imply that he idiocy was someway limited to the GOP – it actually seems that trait is shared among both parties General Assembly leadership.

Thanks for the update MJK! Is this some of the remaining mass transit stimulus $?

No. The Transit money was all allocated in March. This is highway money from the stimulus package that the MPO will flex to transit. It’s not unprecidented but very uncommon in Georgia to do such a thing. It was a staff recommendation that the Transportation Policy Committee went with. Pretty exciting stuff if I may say so from a planner’s perspectvie. :)
