Decatur Metro | March 23, 2009Decaturite and AJC food critic John Kessler writes the sordid and complex history of Thumbs Up and Crescent Moon…and Thumbs Up restaurant over in Access Atlanta this morning.
Not that you need reminding, but when Crescent Moon blew up last year, DM inadvertantly became a clearinghouse of info and debate, thanks to frequent postings by wait staff like Looney Mooney and MyFavoriteWaitress, who eventually went on strike. Hope they are much happier today!
I’m thinking this could be a great horror movie. Throw some body parts that show up in customers’ omelets. Meanwhile Rob Zombie is putzing around in the Decatur cemetery. Hello Rob???
Is that Rob Zombie of the awesome band White Zombie? I loved that band–used it to “test” new speakers. . . .
“sordid”?
And Kessler needs an editor, too!
You could call it “artistic license”, if you could stomach calling the post “art”.
From MW OnLine:
sordid:
1: marked by baseness or grossness : vile
2 a: dirty , filthy b: wretched , squalid
3: meanly avaricious : covetous
I know Crescent Moon fairly well, and I certainly wouldn’t
apply any of the above to it’s “history.” While the ownership
from Rob to Rob/Lou was highly problematic, I think even
they escape sordid, at least from what I know.
I’ll skip the drama and continue to take my brunch at Pastries a Go Go, Cafe Alsace, Watershed, and occasionally a short drive over to Original Pancake House.
Everyone should try the Porter in L5 for breakfast. Absolutely phenomenal. Plus, you can see how they ripped off the BSP.
DM’s use of the word “sordid” was acceptable. That usage does reflect an opinion about the restaurant’s history. Still, the history as presented by Kessler contrasted changes in ownership with the sentimental relationship that patrons have with their chosen breakfast places. To the sentimental patron, the trading of ownership, the manipulation of menus, and in the end, the mistreatment of employees by the recent owners, would seem base.
I could attempt to be humorous and call it “artifice”!
What I can’t “stomach” is blatantly incorrect word usage,
especially when dictionaries are so readily available on the web,
and sordid is such a “delicious” word.
I do, however, very much appreciate DM’s being a “clearinghouse”
for accurate information and reporting, and I read your blog
every day.
I’m not sure that “sordid” is an incorrect adjective to describe Crescent Moon’s history. Perhaps its a bit strong – maybe “messy” would have been more appropriate – but is it really incorrect?
Can’t sordid be used to mean unsavory? As I recall, that pretty much defines how it went down.
Speaking as someone who was there sordid don’t even cover it.
doesn’t
A demanding toddler is helping me : )
Wow. Do tell us what we missed!
(And I don’t mean the toddler!)
