At the O2 Forum stage, the musician was seen “waving a flag in a manner or under circumstances that would reasonably lead one to suspect he supports a banned organization, namely Hezbollah,” according to a police statement. This act falls under the Terrorism Act 2000, the British anti-terrorism law, especially since Hezbollah, a pro-Iranian Lebanese group, is recognized as a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom.
Liam O’Hanna is set to appear in a London court on June 18, although he and his bandmates “deny this ‘offense’” and assert they will “vigorously defend themselves.” On social media, they argue: “This is political policing. It’s a circus of distraction.” “While they benefit from genocide, they use an ‘anti-terrorism law’ against us for displaying a flag that was thrown on stage,” they added. “We proudly stand with the people… We are on the right side of history, not you. We will fight you in your courts. We will win.”
A Stance That Displeases Authorities
Kneecap had already sparked controversy in April after their performance at Coachella in California. On stage, group members shouted pro-Palestine slogans and chanted “Fuck Israel” while condemning the horrors of war: “Palestinians have nowhere to go. This is their home, damn it! And they are being bombed from the sky!” This activism did not sit well with American politicians, who promptly called for the revocation of their work visas.
However, the controversy doesn’t end there. Following this, the British Conservative Party also expressed outrage over Kneecap’s positions and unearthed other videos where the members appeared to support Hamas and Hezbollah. This led to the cancellation of a series of concerts in England and Germany and prompted an investigation by the anti-terrorism police.

“As artists, we feel the need to express our opposition to any political repression of artistic freedom,” it reads. “Whether or not one agrees with the political views of K is irrelevant: it is fundamentally in the interest of every artist that all forms of creative expression be protected in a society that values culture, and that this campaign of interference be condemned and ridiculed.”
