    Oakhurst Elementary’s “Junktique” is Back!

    Decatur Metro | November 1, 2010

Oakhurst Elementary’s new annual community marketplace event, “Junktique”, is back for a second year.

According to a press release I recently received, last year’s event raised $6,000 to meet the goal of buying the three remaining ActivBoards the School needed to outfit every classroom.  This year they hope to raise $10,000 to equip the School’s outdoor classroom with the necessary supplies and teacher training materials.  Here’s all the info…

The Junktique is back! The second annual event will be held Sunday, November 7, 2010 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Solarium in Oakhurst Village in Decatur. Junktique 2010 will feature a local artists’ market, a collectibles yard sale, live music, and tasty food and beverages. New this year is a “By Kids for Kids” yard sale where Oakhurst Elementary kids can experience the thrills of commerce.

Looking For Free Meeting Space in Decatur

    Decatur Metro | August 18, 2010

    Allison writes in…

Hi, DM! I’m a frequent reader and sporadic poster on the blog, and I have a question.

The nonprofit for which I work here in Decatur is curious about what free or low-cost meeting space might be out there in the Decatur area. Occasionally, we have meetings with more people than our tine conference room can hold, and we don’t have the ability to pay a premium for a big meeting space.

Might some of your readers have some suggestions?

The Solarium at Scottish Rite is one option if your event is free and open to the public, has a minimal impact on the Solarium grounds, your event doesn’t conflict with any prescheduled events or booked rentals.  Where else?

Decatur Low Country Boil on October 22nd

    Decatur Metro | October 13, 2009

On Thursday, October 22nd at 6:30p, Decatur will again host it’s “Low Country Boil” at the Solarium in Oakhurst!

For a $50 donation, you’ll be let loose on food and drink prepared by “Executive Chefs Michael Condon of Badda Bing and Ray Allen of New Orleans along with local celebrity chefs” and be serenaded with live music by the Dammages.  You’ll also get yourself a snazzy low country boil t-shirt (which I hope would be covered in crawfish parts and beer by the end of the night).

As always, all proceeds from the event go to the Decatur Education Fund.
