Oakhurst Elementary’s “Junktique” is Back!
Decatur Metro | November 1, 2010
Oakhurst Elementary’s new annual community marketplace event, “Junktique”, is back for a second year.
According to a press release I recently received, last year’s event raised $6,000 to meet the goal of buying the three remaining ActivBoards the School needed to outfit every classroom. This year they hope to raise $10,000 to equip the School’s outdoor classroom with the necessary supplies and teacher training materials. Here’s all the info…
The Junktique is back! The second annual event will be held Sunday, November 7, 2010 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Solarium in Oakhurst Village in Decatur. Junktique 2010 will feature a local artists’ market, a collectibles yard sale, live music, and tasty food and beverages. New this year is a “By Kids for Kids” yard sale where Oakhurst Elementary kids can experience the thrills of commerce.
This year’s theme, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” will be integrated into every aspect of the event. The artists who incorporate recycled materials into their art will receive special designation at the event. Refillable beverage cups and shopping bags will be available for purchase. Food vendors will be asked to use only recyclable serving ware, and recycling bins will be provided.
The artists’ market will be located inside the Solarium and will feature up to 30 local artists. Both the adult and the kids’ yard sales will be located on the Solarium lawn. Yard sale spaces for adults and children can be reserved for $25 and $10, respectively. Artists seeking a booth and those interested in reserving yard sale space can visit www.junktiquedecatur.com for more information.
The Solarium at Old Scottish Rite is located in the heart of the Oakhurst Business District. Attendees are encouraged to walk or roll to the event, but street parking will be available.

Gotta say, I like this as a fundraising ploy a lot better than having elementary school students (and their parents) out selling overpriced wrapping paper. More fun, less annoying.
More fun, less annoying.
I reserve the right to use this if and when I ever need to promote DM 3.0.
Don’t forget “passive fundraising”–not as much fun as markets and auctions, but about as non-annoying as you can get–you do and spend nothing! All CSD parents should be doing the following for their schools and other community members are encouraged as well:
- Use a school partner card when shopping at Publix
- If you have a Target VISA, designate your school to benefit
- If you use Georgia Gas, sign up for you school to benefit
- Collect Boxtops for Education off products–throwing one away is like throwing away a dime
There’s other passive fundraising programs as well, depending on your school, but the above are the most lucrative and common, and it’s a shame that not all families in CSD are using them. There’s suburban and private schools that earns thousands, even tens of thousands, of dollars with passive fundraising. Some of that is explained by their population size, but they still are earning per student way over what CSD schools tend to earn. A bit of the problem is that our kids change schools so often that parents have to periodically change the school they are designating to benefit, but hey, if we are really committed to the ECLC/K-3/4-5/RMS/DHS concept, how hard can that be? For families with multiple kids, I say to designate everything for the school of your oldest child, since eventually your younger kids will get there to benefit.
And for fun….definitely attend the markets and auctions!
