Google Fiber Hut Installed in Downtown Decatur

    Decatur Metro | March 28, 2016 | 11:12 am

    google fiber2

    googlefiber1

Finally!  Something better than secondhand hearsay from a “survey guy” wandering the neighborhoods regarding Google Fiber!

Marcia took these photos of the arrival and installation of the Google Fiber hut in downtown Decatur last Friday.   This is definitely the most visible sign that Google Fiber is coming to Decatur thus far.

An unofficial map of permits issued for Google around Atlanta shows there are a variety of Google Fiber Huts popping up around the metro.

The Google Fiber website has Atlanta in the “construction” phase of work.   After that it’s just “Sign Up” and “Installation”, so it seems like things are truckin’ along.

The Proposed Location of Decatur’s Google Fiber Hut

    Decatur Metro | December 7, 2015 | 12:45 pm

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 10.28.48 AM

The Decatur City Commission is scheduled to vote tonight on a lease agreement for land for Google to build a “Fiber Hut” in the City of Decatur.

According to a note from Project Manager Lena Stevens to City Manager Peggy Merriss, Google has selected a 1,600 square foot parcel “on Atlanta Avenue, adjacent to the Ebster Pool pump-house and Police Department parking lot.”

The “10×30 foot structures…house the telecommunications and fiber interface equipment necessary for Google to provide high-speed internet. Each hut supports about 20,000 homes”., according to the Cary Citizen.

Here’s a satellite view of the area (courtesy of Google, no less)…

Additionally, here are the proposed changes to the site and the cost to Google, according to Ms. Stevens’ note…

The proposed license area is approximately 1,600 square feet, and includes 10 x 30 foot structure as well as a black vinyl coated chain link fence around the entire perimeter of the site. An existing retaining wall will be removed along Atlanta Avenue and the land will be graded in a gentle slope away from the street. New retaining walls will be built along the east and south side of the license area. Two trees will be replaced on the site and vegetative screening will be planted along the fence line. A photo of a typical Google Fiber Hut Site is included on Figure 1 on the following page. Google Fiber has agreed to pay an annual fee of $3 per square foot for each Network Hut Site, resulting in a payment of $4800 for Hut Site #121.

    Google Fiber Activity Around Decatur

    Decatur Metro | December 4, 2015 | 9:57 am

    atttrucks

Daren sent in this pic a couple of days back and pontificated “Six Att cable trucks in the parking lot of the MArriott tonight. Fiber installers?”  “Sure, maybe.” I thought.

But then this I saw note this morning from the always reliable LumpintheRoad in FFAF...

Google Fiber contractor was measuring utility poles and distances in front of our house on Fairview Ave. this morning. Came very close to taking him a croissant and cocoa.

Anyone else have a Fiber sighting to report?

Google Fiber Installation Beginning Around Atlanta

    Decatur Metro | June 25, 2015 | 12:30 pm

    fiber install

    From Google…

    Hey Atlanta,

Have you seen us around town lately? We’re the ones with hard hats and dirt stains on our clothes.

Over the last few months, our team has been drawing up blueprints for our new fiber network in metro Atlanta. But that was just the start.

We’re doing some heavy lifting – literally – to bring Google Fiber to communities throughout Atlanta. There are crews working on the streets with boom trucks, tunnel boring machines, and rolls of cables as we form the foundation of our network.

We’ll be sure to let you know if we’re going to be doing construction near your home…
