It must have been a heck of a Thursday night on the square if I’m first today! Happy Friday! Clairemont’s holiday marketplace starts tonight and I believe Winona Park’s tree sale is this weekend so get out there and show CSD some love!
What are the hours for the Clairemont holiday marketplace this evening?
Tonight from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Whoa! It’s not open Saturday evening? I’ve obviously gotten out of the Clairemont news loop. Is it open Sunday?
from the website:
“This year’s Decatur Holiday Marketplace and Cafe will be held Friday, December 4, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.”
http://www.decaturholidaymarketplace.com/
My recollection as a parent/volunteer it has been a Friday evening/Saturday event. Maybe it had different hours/days in previous years. don’t know. 🙂
Correct. It’s been Friday and Saturday since we got here. This is our 4th (and final). Sniff sniff.
It used to be open Saturdays until 8, but last year they changed it to 5 (or 5:30?) I think it was a combo of no tour of homes and a big football game every year. As a participating artist, I can say, foot traffic did drop after 5, but it certainly was more fun/festive to go later rather than end earlier.
I remember the days of the PTA volunteer giants when the market was open until 10 PM on Friday night and nine or 10 PM Saturday night. There were an awful lot of café sales that occurred Saturday night. In fact that was always dinner for our family. But of course we also walked in the snow uphill both ways to the market and back in the good old days….
Speaking of CSD, Decatur-area folks, please consider signing this petition, urging city leaders to make Scott Blvd safer for Westchester Elementary families and other Decatur residents and visitors!

Google Fiber contractor was measuring utility poles and distances in front of our house on Fairview Ave. this morning. Came very close to taking him a croissant and cocoa.
If you say “hi” they may have a t-shirt for you!
True! My son started a conversation with a Google guy on MARTA and he offered up a T-shirt on the spot.
Already got mine in the mail!
Got ours in the mail, too. A beaut!
Have you peeked into the Waffle House (in progress) lately? Pretty snazzy. Looks like they’ve upscaled it a notch to fit in the CoD…
Looks like they might make their “mid-December” opening date.
Anyone have the skinny on what is going on at YDFM? It looks like they razed an entire forest, displaced thousands of native animals, burned hundreds of trees, built a giant wall, and then gave up.
Another reason not to shop there, but the anti-WM folks still do. YDFM destroyed a whole lot more the WM ever did.
LOL. You have an absolute hammerlock on this viewpoint.
If your issue is sprawl/environmental impacts, you shouldn’t shop at either. If your issue is labor practices / human dignity, you’re better off going to Wally (though they only win by a smidge). If your issue is organic, natural, or local food, you’re better off going to YDFM (though Wally keeps upping their game on the organics front).
Living consistently with one’s progressive ideals is so complicated!
life was so much easier when separate issues where simplified into one. now i’ve got to find a new reason to deride “those” people.
self abasement keeps me so busy i hardly have time to protest retail ethics.
Fort DeKalb. It was all a zoning ruse to build a redoubt against the coming market collapse of organic kumquats. When the (previously) good people of Greater Decatur can’t get high quality, pesticide free, fair trade, blood free, organic mini citrus, all hell is going to break loose. Best they should be prepared.
I can’t tell if you’re just asking this to be flippant or genuinely don’t know what’s going on. If the latter, see here:
http://www.decaturmetro.com/2014/03/14/what-will-the-dekalb-farmers-market-expansion-look-like/
No, I really want to know. I am aware of their plans to expand, but it seems like they completely stopped working on it quite awhile ago.
My understanding is the owner is funding this expansion “as he goes” (no debt), so maybe he has to sell some groceries.
My office has a holiday lunch next week at 246. Does anyone familiar with downtown parking during the workday know if there are usually open handicapped spaces near the restaurant at lunchtime?
There are two in proximity out in front of Starbucks. They’re often open but it’s a crap shoot.
The East Court Square cul de sac has two designated spaces that are typically available. They’re maybe 100 yards from 246.
I think the nearest may be in the deck behind the building across the street. I don’t recall any handicap street parking near there, but someone who would notice more than I may be able to help.
And after I posted, I saw Scott’s post. He’s right about the location and the crap shoot.
While we are on the topic of holiday parties, where is the best place in Decatur to have one? We have about 15 people, including spouses. We’d prefer a private room or a special area of the restaurant. We’re looking for dinner/drinks.
For this season? You may be a little late.
Many good choices, although they may be gone. Try the usual great restaurants (Kimball House, 246, Cakes & Ale, Parkers, Cafe Alsace, Colbehs, Iberian Pig, Cafe Lilly, Steinbeck’s).
Also Wahoo!
Twain’s would be a good option as well. Had a nice engagement party for my brother-in-law there a few years ago.
upstairs at square pub!
Why does this site no longer remember my username and email address? I don’t think it is computer setting b/c I have the same issue on my phone.
Anyone else have this issue?
Yes, and moderation, too.
Yes.
OK, will investigate.
If it helps, it has been that way for a few weeks. I just finally got around to asking.
ANy idea how many weeks? Like since the major site blow up a while back? Or more recently?
I would say at least 3 or 4, but I that is at best an educated guess. It might be a little longer. And I guess I missed the site blow up, so I don’t have any timeframe for that.
Been that way for months for me. Happens after I reopen browser (I use Chrome).
I still use IE, but echoing what Brian said, it happens after I reopen the browser.
Interestingly, I just closed and reopened browser, and my info was still there. Maybe a time factor involved, or maybe it’s actually after restart on my computer. Same thing on phone.
OK, I just restarted my laptop and info was still there. Did you fix it already, DM?
Don’t think it is fixed. Closed and re-opened browser, and my info is gone.
Starting to look like one of us should have said something before now.
True for me for months, including right now, on multiple computers/devices and both IE and Safari. I’ve definitely been wishing that my screen name and email address were shorter.
Just become an acronym! We’ll know who you are. 😀
Yes, it’s been happening to me too. For example, I posted this morning and it didn’t remember my username/password, so I filled it in. Then a few minutes ago I posted again and it didn’t remember. But just now, just a few seconds after posting, it remembered me. For me this has been happening for months.
Yes, and I forget every time and have to go back and fill in name and email.
It’s been like this for me for a couple years it seems like. Just assumed that’s the way the site worked now.
Yes, I just assumed it was supposed to be that way too.
Update: Not remembering me on my phone again, but still remembering me on laptop using Chrome.
Was out for a couple of hours, turned laptop off and now not remembering my info. Seems to have something to do with length of time not on site.
I made a tweak that may have helped. Let me know if it gets any better. Much appreciated.
Actually I think I may have found the issue. Did it seemed like you were getting logged out every 30 mins or so?
Not sure about the length of time..will check back about 30 minutes after this post, which I had to login to post.
Remembered me that time.
Nice. I think I may have finally figured it. Steve, it won’t work the first time you posted but let me know about the next.
Still not working for me. Later, I’ll try to restart my browser and see if that helps.
OK may be working now. I’ll confirm tomorrow.
Login remembered on Chrome today, but not my phone.
Thanks for the update! Had you commented on your phone since I said yesterday afternoon that I thought I might have fixed it?
Seems to working OK for me on Window Chrome. Haven’t tried on my phone yet.
Thanks.
Re “instructions have been sent to you by e-mail”: no, they haven’t
DM: you can delete this now since the moderated post came out of moderation.
Me too.
yes
Me
DM, you and I had an email exchange on or about 8/10/15 about this issue.
Right. I recall that now. OK, we’ll see what we can do. But I’m thinking it’s not going to be an easy fix.
I stopped receiving email updates from DM about 3 weeks ago. I had to go sign up for them again.
Hmm…Those still seem to be operating normally from everything I can see on my end.
We can’t make it to the WP tree sale tomorrow. Can anyone tell me when is the Boy Scout one at Oakhurst Pres?
I think the boy scouts are out there every weekend. Not just a one weekend deal.
I’ve got a shoulder injury right now and can’t heft a tree (Winona Park is otherwise our preferred tree provider), so we’re using Tree Elves this year (King of Pops’ winter business). We used them year before last for a live tree, which was OK, but glad they’ve switched to cut Fraser firs.
http://treeelves.net
First Christian at E. Ponce and Nelson Ferry delivers for a fee. Used to be free delivery but no longer.
We got our tree from the boy scouts last weekend. Beautiful and fresh as always. They are there every weekend as far as I know.
So, can someone please set up a web cam such that we can monitor the line at Tacqueria?
Next Saturday – Downtown Atlanta- there is a march for Sensible GUN Laws. This march is scheduled around the 3rd Anniversary of Sandy Hook. Many Decatur folks are planning to go. Join us?

Margaret: when I click on the link, the page says that the event if full. Do you have any info on the event?
It’s that time of year. Just had a package returned to shipper by the Decatur Post Office due to “incorrect shipping address” – when nothing is incorrect about it. Grumble. Wasn’t there a public meeting about this just a day or two ago in Atlanta?
Good news. If my similar experience was any indicator, the package actually just goes back to the local post office to be placed somewhere where no one in customer service can find it. That’s when they tell you your carrier will redeliver. It will then show up five days later.
Last year this happened this time of year and we walked down there on Saturday morning and the person at the PO Box window found it. But I really don’t get how our local post office can claim the address we get mail at every day is not valid. It must be temp employees — the USPS only seems to have this problem during the holidays.
Actually I have had properly addressed mail returned all fall. I forwarded my mail when we moved, and the personal, hand addressed mail was (without an exception I can think of) returned to sender as “undeliverable as addressed.”
Several people had recommended Chad Peck with Intown Contracting (formerly Intown Roofer). I am NOT recommending them. While they did good work when they came, this company was incredibly hard to reach and schedule appointments to meet. The initial estimate he declined to schedule multiple weeks in advance because he “might be on a job”. When we did manage to connect, he repaired my roof and placed gutter guards (>$2,000 work) quickly but he continued to fail to come over for estimates on the rest of the projects I have to complete. I attempted for over 2 months to have further estimates placed with Chad being unavailable and worse, three times he no-showed / no-called after making the appointment. Apparently my home projects were not a priority for this company. I attempted to call again today to find out why he had not arrived and received no answer. I ultimately texted him that our business is complete as this is the third time without a reply and he texted back “OK sorry about that”. After this lack of professionalism, I am now sharing my story.
