Google Fiber Activity Around Decatur
Decatur Metro | December 4, 2015 | 9:57 amDaren sent in this pic a couple of days back and pontificated “Six Att cable trucks in the parking lot of the MArriott tonight. Fiber installers?” “Sure, maybe.” I thought.
But then this I saw note this morning from the always reliable LumpintheRoad in FFAF...
Google Fiber contractor was measuring utility poles and distances in front of our house on Fairview Ave. this morning. Came very close to taking him a croissant and cocoa.
Anyone else have a Fiber sighting to report?
All I want to know is, “where is my free t-shirt?”
Got mine!
Mine too.
Are they one per household? The Mrs.’ arrived a few weeks ago, but I haven’t received mine.
I haven’t gotten mine either! It made me nervous that maybe my street in Decatur wasn’t actually going to get Fiber.
Same! We live on N Decatur which is technically in Decatur but only about a dozen houses on the street. I am worried we may be skipped.
Given the number of Google Fiber t-shirts I’ve seen on Decatur joggers, I’m guessing Fiber’s going to be a monster hit when it launches.
Couple of guys in a truck on Hibernia last month, checking out utility poles near MARTA ventilation entrance. I casually remarked, “Oh, please tell me you’re with Google.” One of them laughed and said that as a matter of fact they were. Couldn’t get an answer to “when?!!! when?!!!” But at least they’re in the neighborhood.
The survey guy who told me that they have to survey 880 K poles in the metro has been around the Great Lakes since sometime this summer, cant recall specifically when.
Saw him earlier this week on N.Decatur surveying the poles across the street from Publix…
Re the Google Fiber shirts, 1 per household per the website…
My son and I observed a guy “studying” telephone polls several weeks ago, and wonder what he was up to – hoping he is the google guy described in the above posts.
The guy I’ve seen drives a jeep, usually has his dog in tow and has an awesome large-clipboard set-up that is attached by some kind of harness giving him use of both hands…
I want one of those clipboards, particularly for use at tailgates and beer-fest! Got to be able to shovel food in and drink at the same time while standing up — I might just launch a kickstarter campaign.
Is there a way to know if your street is included? Aren’t they basically going to install almost on a street by street basis based on interest?
Guys surveying poles and wires on Coventry said they were working for AT&T but didn’t know if it would be optical all the way to the house. Corning Optical Cable going up in the neighborhood around Coventry and Vickers.
I’ve seen two different Google surveyors in Glennwood Estates in recent weeks. Both admitted to being Google, and both said years, not months or weeks, for installation to be done.
I have AT&T Gigapower on Drexel Ave, it’s 1gbps and $70/month with a 1 year contract (also you agree to have them mail you things related to what you view on the internet). It’s pretty fantastic if you’re itchin’ for fiber right now.
Wiring our building here in Castleberry Hill, trucks were out last week, and yes, got the t-shirt, quite nice I might add!
