Google Fiber Hut Installed in Downtown Decatur

    Decatur Metro | March 28, 2016 | 11:12 am

Finally!  Something better than secondhand hearsay from a “survey guy” wandering the neighborhoods regarding Google Fiber!

Marcia took these photos of the arrival and installation of the Google Fiber hut in downtown Decatur last Friday.   This is definitely the most visible sign that Google Fiber is coming to Decatur thus far.

An unofficial map of permits issued for Google around Atlanta shows there are a variety of Google Fiber Huts popping up around the metro.

The Google Fiber website has Atlanta in the “construction” phase of work.   After that it’s just “Sign Up” and “Installation”, so it seems like things are truckin’ along.

Google Fiber Installation Beginning Around Atlanta

    Decatur Metro | June 25, 2015 | 12:30 pm

    fiber install

    From Google…

    Hey Atlanta,

Have you seen us around town lately? We’re the ones with hard hats and dirt stains on our clothes.

Over the last few months, our team has been drawing up blueprints for our new fiber network in metro Atlanta. But that was just the start.

We’re doing some heavy lifting – literally – to bring Google Fiber to communities throughout Atlanta. There are crews working on the streets with boom trucks, tunnel boring machines, and rolls of cables as we form the foundation of our network.

We’ll be sure to let you know if we’re going to be doing construction near your home…

Atlantans Already Asking – How Much Does Google Fiber Cost?

    Decatur Metro | January 26, 2015 | 11:15 pm

With the Wall Street Journal reporting this evening that Atlanta is among 4 Southern cities selected to receive Google Fiber – and an official announcement expected to come tomorrow – Atlantans are already asking questions about the much hyped, but perhaps not widely understood, service.

For starters, how much does it cost?

We can begin to get a sense of Google Fiber’s price from the cities where it is currently available: Kansas City, MO, Austin, TX and Provo, UT.

In Kansas City, the city with the most comparable population to metro Atlanta, Google Fiber offers Gigabit Internet and TV (150 channels) for $120/month with a waived $300 “construction fee” and include tv and network box and DVR.  If you just want gigabit internet, the service is $70/month in KC with a waived “construction fee”.

Most notable may be the Basic Internet option, which provides customers with 5mbps download/1mbps upload speeds for free for 7 years if one pays a one time $300 installation fee.

In both Austin and Provo, the gigabit internet-only is also $70 and the basic internet option is also free.  The Austin the TV/Internet option is $130/month, while Provo’s TV/Internet package is the same as Kansas City – $120.

WSJ: Google Fiber Coming to Atlanta and Three Other Southern Cities

    Decatur Metro | January 26, 2015 | 9:11 pm

Here’s your likely answer to what will be announced at Google’s press conference tomorrow.

The Wall Street Journal reports this evening that Atlanta, Charlottle N.C., Raleigh-Durham N.C. and Nashville, TN are all getting ultra-high-speed Google Fiber internet.

Google Inc. is preparing to offer its high-speed fiber-optic Internet service in four new metro areas, the latest step in a careful expansion of the service.

Google will announce launches of Google Fiber in Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and Nashville, Tenn. in coming days, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Click over to WSJ for a bit more in the article.  Google Fiber is already located in Kansas City, Austin and Provo, Utah.

In potentially related news, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported today that Google – in addition to Twitter – are looking at offices at Ponce City Market.

UPDATE II:  Check out our latest post regarding Google Fiber for the answer to the question in the post title – the Wall Street Journal is reporting this evening that Google Fiber is coming to Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh and Nashville.

    ——————————————————————————————————

UPDATE: Leoghann pointed out earlier in another thread that Google Fiber Georgia, LLC was formed back in November according to the Secretary of State’s website.

    ——————————————————————————————————-

Draw any conclusions regarding Google Fiber from this that you will.

Google just announced a press conference tomorrow at 1p at their Atlanta offices in Midtown.

No details have been provided except to say that folks at the event will “learn more about what’s in store for the people of Metro Atlanta.”  According to the note, “Google representatives and city spokespeople” will be in attendance.

    Stay tuned!
