Second Sunday Decatur Cemetery Tour Tomorrow

    Decatur Metro | July 11, 2009

Linda Harris forwards this note from the Decatur Preservation Alliance…

You are invited to the Second Sunday Strolls this Sunday, July 12, at 2:30 p.m. in Decatur Cemetery. This 30-45 minute historic walk is led by volunteer and Cemetery expert Cathy Vogel. Whether this is your first visit or your 30th, you’ll learn something you didn’t know about metro Atlanta’s oldest public burial space. Meet at the well house gazebo off of Commerce Drive.

And if you can’t make this Sunday’s walk, the remaining dates for 2009 are August 9, September 13, and October 11.

Sponsored by the Friends of Decatur Cemetery, a project of the Decatur Preservation Alliance.

Homeless Encampment Found on Decatur Square

    Decatur Metro | July 9, 2009

    Alex writes in…

Met up with some friends at Eddie’s last night. I left a little past 11, walked across the Square to go home and was stunned to find an encampent of homeless people who had made their beds for the night, right there on the Square, just beside the ‘steaming’ children’s statue.

There were seeral adults, two of whom were stretched out on the benches, covered in blankets, catching their z’s. As I glanced to the right, I saw a stroller. Oh lawd.

I called the police non-emergency number and the dispatcher seemed to be confused about what I told her. When I told her that the folks were camped out by the children’s statue on the square, she paused and then asked if I had an address for that. I got a bit flustered and said, “Well, it’s where Sycamore dead-ends…..you know, The Square!”

She kept trying to put it together and I kept wondering how much more clear I could be than “the square”. But, true to form, Decatur PD arrived in about 10 minutes, asked a lot of questions and moved them along.

I’m not even sure what to say about this.  Things must be getting pretty bad out there if people haven taken to sleeping in well-lit, well-patroled areas.

    DHS Gets Big Surveillance Donation

    Decatur Metro | July 2, 2009

How’s this for in-depth reporting!  Cut and pasted straight out of the Board of Ed’s July 14th agenda…

    Requested Action

Move approval of the donation from Iron Sky of new cameras and surveillance systems and services at the DHS main campus, the DHS stadium and the DHS gymnasium and auditorium.

    Background

City Schools of Decatur is moving forward after accepting a gracious offer of a surveillance system from Iron Sky. The project team has met and began their work to place over 50 cameras in Decatur High School, the stadium, and planned for the gymnasium and auditorium. Camera locations and types have been carefully chosen. The DHS system is being constructed and fully tested in Houston, Texas before shipment and installation in Decatur. A firm start will be sent following that successful test. Training on the new equipment will be scheduled for late July or early August.

This offer amounts to approximjately $159,000. We have received more details from our legal team regarding this unique situation. We request that the board accept this donation from Iron Sky. A contract is not needed.

I wonder if this is a result of the recent “lockdown”.  Quite a donation!

    Yoforia Coming To Church Street?

    Decatur Metro | June 29, 2009

Two comments under the recent “Yogurt Tap” post assert that trendy Yoforia is also coming to Church Street in the coming months.

    Sam seems especially sure…

This is 100% true. My best friend is the owner and he told me Yoforia is coming. And it is also on Church Street.

Nothing on the Yoforia website yet though.

OK, so first question…where on Church Street?  My first official guess will be the old Atlanta Bread Company space.

Second question, if frozen yogurt shops will soon outnumber churches along this street shouldn’t we petition a name change?
