James Radford Rescues a Hawk in Midtown

    Decatur Metro | March 31, 2010 | 5:05 pm

    Hooty would be so proud!

Former Decatur City Commission candidate James Radford writes on Flickr

    Coolest lunch break ever.

So, on my way back to work after lunch at Colony Square, I’m about to cross over 14th street, and out of nowhere this enormous bird just falls out of the sky and into the middle of the road with a thud. Its a huge hawk and it fell right on the line between the lanes of traffic. Me and these two other guys see it, and are like, holy crap, what should we do? Its still moving. And cars are whizzing past it threatening to run over it at any moment. I think it must have hit the King and Spalding building, which is made of reflective glass.

What Did the Decatur City Commission Candidates Do With Campaign Funds?

    Decatur Metro | January 12, 2010 | 10:38 am

During the city comission campaigns this past year, now-commissioner Patti Garrett brought up the issue of what would be done with remaining campaign funds after Election Day during a debate between the District 2 candidates.

    We now have the answer.

According to December’s campaign disclosures obtained by DM, Ms. Garrett made a $500 donation to the parent organization of Decatur’s MLK Service Day Decatur Preservation Alliance with her remaining balance.  Of the $270 still left in the account, campaign chair Allison Adams explains that the campaign is leaving the funds in the account “in case something unexpected comes up.”  Ms. Adams also noted that there is still an outstanding loan of $750 to Garrett’s husband, Gary. (View full report here)

Ms. Garrett’s opponent, Kyle Williams also took to the act of donating, distributing every penny held by his campaign after expenses were paid to local groups.   During the months of November and December, Mr. Williams donated over $2,000 to various organizations in the Decatur and Atlanta area.  Donations were made to Decatur High School ($500), Decatur Seniors Helping Seniors ($964.56), Friends of Simone Bell ($400), and Neighbor in Need ($250). James Radford’s Concession Note

    Decatur Metro | November 4, 2009 | 10:25 am

    From his blog…

I just called Fred to congratulate him on winning a third term as City Commissioner. While we certainly debated the issues vigorously during this campaign, today’s vote reflects an argument that is hard to beat: Decatur residents are pretty darn happy with the City we live in. And that satisfaction is driven in large part by the leadership of Fred and the rest of our commissioners. So, congratulations to Fred on a job well-done and a position well-earned. And thank you to Fred for being so gracious to Amy and me throughout this campaign. You have helped to make this a great experience for us and the voters as a whole.

The final vote tally, as reported by WSB, was 1010 for Fred, 449 for me. I can’t express in words how proud and humbled I am that 447 fellow Decaturites (besides Amy and I myself, naturally) made the decision to cast their votes for me. This is a testament to the strength of our democracy and the willingness of Decatur citizens to embrace all comers.

Decatur Heights Residents Clash Over “Wellness Center”

    Decatur Metro | October 19, 2009 | 12:54 pm

Both InDecatur and city commission candidate James Radford have posted extensive articles about last week’s meeting at Decatur Heights Baptist Church, regarding the “Peer Support and Wellness Center” at 444 Sycamore Drive in Decatur Heights.

At issue is whether the facility  – which aids people with mental health problems – classifies as a “licensed personal care home”.  If so, it can operate within a residential neighborhood (i.e. R60) without variance.  When I first contacted the city’s planning director Amanda Thompson about this issue way back in May (after receiving a note from a resident in the district) she said that the city was still determining whether this was indeed the case.

However, in late June/early July, Thompson visited the facility and determined it did qualify as a “personal care home” for the following reasons…

James Radford Calls For Giving CSD “Binding Vote” Regarding Large-Scale Annexation

    Decatur Metro | October 15, 2009 | 12:56 pm

While we’ve been spending much of our time in recent days participating in 6-word play, many of the Decatur City Commission candidates have been laying out platforms, asking questions and proposing solutions on their own candidacy blogs. With the election fast approaching, and a much-anticipated online debate just a week away, I think it’s high time we took a closer look at some of the issues being addressed by the candidates, don’t you?  Thus begins the series…

On October 3rd, First District candidate James Radford addressed the recent large-scale annexation attempt by the city on his blog and stated…

There were problems with the way the commission dealt with the annexation issue this past term. Namely, the failure to adequately evaluate the impact that annexation will have on our school system.

Radford goes on to detail the issues discovered within the financial impact calculations of the city’s annexation report and the subsequent report by CSD in response to these exposed issues.  Out of this series of events, he concluded…

It is critical that the school board be deeply involved in any large-scale annexation decision. They must be given a BINDING VOTE on any large-scale annexations. That is the only way to ensure that the impact on the schools is the number one priority. As Commissioner, I will recognize that the City’s business and CSD’s business are, in many regards, one and the same. Especially on the issue of annexation, there must be very close communication, and nothing should be done that will weaken our schools.
