The legendary Karl Lagerfeld was not only a fashion icon but also an avid collector of unique residences. The recently published Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Houses by Thames & Hudson provides an in-depth look at his eclectic mix of homes, ranging from a Monte Carlo apartment filled with Memphis design elements to the elaborately classic eighteenth-century Hôtel Pozzo di Borgo in Paris. In each of his residences, Lagerfeld skillfully mingled historic and contemporary styles, illuminating the works of significant figures in various design eras. While his homes frequently graced the pages of major magazines and sparked media buzz, his professional spaces have seldom been explored until now.
The transformation of Lagerfeld’s private office in Saint-Germain-des-Prés marks a new chapter in the appreciation of his work environments. The luxury accommodation service HIGHSTAY has meticulously reconfigured this multi-story office into the two-bedroom Saint-Germain I, preserving its original layout and décor just as Lagerfeld last left it. This secluded space served as Lagerfeld’s personal sanctuary away from the major fashion houses, where he conducted private affairs and entertained close friends.

The design of the expansive 2,690 square-foot unit is characteristic of the late 1990s to early 2000s, featuring futuristic built-ins with surfaces of both polished and patinated steel in sleek curves. This minimalist yet futuristic decor retains an element of luxury, subtly echoing Lagerfeld’s opulent taste.
The grand staircase within the unit was co-designed by Lagerfeld and renowned Australian designer Marc Newson. At the foot of the stairs stands the “La tête dans les nuages” (Head in the Clouds) sculpture by artist Laurence Perratzi.
In an adjacent lounge, the ceiling is clad in mirrors, enhancing the space visually. This is paired with dual steel libraries and a bedframe-armoire combination, all crafted in the same stylistic language. What might typically be cold, industrial steel is transformed into a warm, inviting feature. In smaller, more private spaces such as the walk-in closets and bar area, dark wooden paneling provides a rich contrast.
The unit, which also features a private hammam and sauna, embodies a modern urban retreat with a second en-suite bedroom, a separate dining room, and various small annexes. The design consistently incorporates capsule-like and pixelated elements, offering a sophisticated nod to early digital themes.
Adding to the allure, a specially curated Karl Itinerary offers guests insights into Lagerfeld’s favorite spots on the Left Bank, including Café de Flore and Maison du Caviar.
