Jehnny Beth Shines as the High Priestess of Dark Pop: You Heartbreaker, You

By Tyler Jenkins

“You Heartbreaker, You” : Jehnny Beth en grande prêtresse de la pop noire

The fury aimed at the world’s chaos energizes the new solo album of Savages’ lead singer, featuring industrial rock undertones.

Five years after To Love Is to Die, her debut solo effort, the lead vocalist of the renowned rock band Savages returns with the fiery You Heartbreaker, You. This album, where darkness unveils but clearly mirrors the anxious slumbers and prevailing chaos of 2025, showcases Jehnny Beth in her element: crafting a gothic masterpiece that is lavish, elegant, and, naturally, sharp.

The album kicks off with Broken Rib, instantly disrupting the mood. The production, meticulously handled by her life-and-death partner Johnny Hostile, sets a backdrop that allows for a cathartic scream until one is out of breath. Throughout the album, the influence of Trent Reznor, the mastermind behind Nine Inch Nails, is prevalent and compelling.

A Multifaceted Artist

Jehnny Beth’s artistry is a subtle blend of relentless energy and confirmed talent across various fields—including notable performances in films directed by Jacques Audiard and Justine Triet, and as a pioneering host on the music show Echoes on Arte. The album features delicate textures and overdriven guitars (I See Your Pain, Reality), moments where barriers are broken to let fury spread, and industrial hooks (No Good for People, Out of My Reach). With a more assertive and refined tone than To Love Is to Die, Jehnny Beth firmly reestablishes herself as a high priestess of dark pop.

You Heartbreaker, You (Fiction Records/Virgin). Available August 29. Live at La Maroquinerie, Paris, on October 13.
