In the scenic town of Alcudia, overlooking the stunning coastline of Mallorca, the German-based design firm Holzrausch has expertly renovated Casa da Praia, an unremarkable 1980s vacation house, into a breathtaking summer haven. This residence now exudes a fusion of mid-century Californian style with distinct Brazilian and Mexican design elements.

The house’s exterior presents a subtle, understated look that belies the vibrant splashes of color that enliven the area around the swimming pool, including an outdoor shower reminiscent of the vibrant hues found in Luis Barragán’s Mexico City home and studio. A smooth, textured plaster has replaced the original stone façade, giving the exterior a unified, sculptural appearance. The property is also enhanced by a variety of Mediterranean and indigenous plants, which breathe life into the outdoor environment.

The original two-level structure and pine beams of Casa da Praia have been preserved by Holzrausch, which has also introduced teak wood for the cabinetry, wall panels, and kitchen furnishings. A significant architectural modification was the removal of a central false ceiling, which opened up the home’s core to daylight from the terrace, linking the indoor space more closely with the natural surroundings.

Holzrausch drew inspiration from celebrated architects like Barragán.
