Milan Apartment Transformation: A Versatile Urban Oasis Revealed!

Modern homes are rapidly evolving and are now expected to serve multiple purposes. A single area might function as an office or a playroom during the day, and transform into a lounge or bedroom by night. Faced with the challenge of redesigning a traditional Milanese apartment, which was originally divided into numerous small rooms, the local architectural firm Atelierzero adopted an innovative strategy.

The creative team at Atelierzero decided to remove most of the non-structural walls, creating a more open space. They then cleverly used a variety of furniture-like structures to segment the area into a main living space and an attached studio. These structures also facilitate easy and fluid transitions between spaces without the use of traditional doors.

The use of distinct yet harmonious color schemes helps to define these architectural volumes as independent elements, yet when viewed together, they resemble a miniature urban skyline, with structures of varying sizes and shapes placed next to each other.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic colonnaded walkways that are a hallmark of this northern Italian city, the apartment’s main hallway is bathed in a warm orange hue, reminiscent of Milan’s bustling commercial areas. This corridor, which features a striking terrazzo floor reminiscent of the work of Carlo Scarpa, acts as the central axis of the apartment. On one side, rectangular openings lead to the main social area of the home, while on the opposite side, built-in cabinets conceal the entrance to various rooms including a powder room, a utility area, an en suite bedroom, and the semi-independent studio.

In the central gathering area of the apartment, a taupe kitchen unit seems to effortlessly levitate above the ground. This cleverly positioned module also discreetly shields a private study and dining area located behind it.

The interior design features a thoughtful mix of furnishings from well-known Milanese and internationally recognized brands such as B&B Italia, CC-Tapis, Oluce, and Flos. These are complemented by classic re-editions from iconic manufacturers like Artek, Marset, and Thonet.

This carefully chosen assortment of furnishings not only ties the whole space together but also softens what could otherwise be an overly austere interior. The visual and tactile elements of the design create a compelling atmosphere. The adjoining studio mirrors this cohesive aesthetic, ensuring that both areas, while physically separate, present a unified appearance.
