Nestled on a serene dead-end street adjacent to São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park, Casa MA, crafted by RUA 141 arquitetura, demonstrates how constraints can spark innovative architectural design. Despite having a narrow width of only 13 feet and a length of nearly 60 feet, the property capitalizes on its limited dimensions to create a multi-layered, luminous sanctuary that embraces movement, materiality, and the integration of natural elements.
The residence is owned by a young professional couple, both of whom are triathletes. Their day-to-day activities include training, working, and socializing with friends. They sought a home that would resonate with their dynamic lifestyle—open, adaptable, and with a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. They also desired a warm, welcoming space that could accommodate the expansion of their family. When a small, attached home became available on this uncommonly quiet street, they seized the chance to build their dream home, moving from the familiarity of a rental to the excitement of creating something anew.
The existing building was inadequate for their needs, with its dark rooms, low ceilings, and bulky concrete stairs making the small space feel even more confined. Instead of attempting to modify the existing limitations, architect Mona Singal from RUA 141 opted for a complete reconstruction, preserving only the neighboring brick walls. The urgency of the project was heightened by the couple’s anticipation of their first child, pushing the pace of decision-making.

A steel frame forms the structural core of the new dwelling, chosen for its quick assembly, precision, and minimal disturbance to the cramped site. This frame supports a 1,453-square-foot home spread over three levels and divided into two sections, connected by metallic walkways.
At the center of the design is a modest garden featuring a native araçá tree, which acts as a natural light well and ventilation facilitator throughout the home’s slender layout. Bedrooms face this green heart, offering a peaceful retreat that contrasts with the urban environment outside.
The ground level serves as an expansive social hub where the living room, dining area, and kitchen merge into one cohesive space. This area is defined by a versatile concrete feature that transitions from a bench to a shelf, then to a bicycle display, and finally a countertop. The couple’s bicycles are displayed prominently, accessible and integral to the home’s aesthetic, echoing their active lifestyle.
The interior’s character is marked by a play of materials. Stark black steel pillars and beams provide an industrial vibe, complemented by exposed electrical conduits and track lighting. This is softened by the warmth of wood used in herringbone tauari flooring, freijó wood frames, and bespoke woodwork that adds texture and warmth. Walls of white-painted brick, stripped back to reveal the original construction, enhance the brightness of the indoor spaces.
Ascending the metallic staircase, whose perforated railings allow unobstructed light flow, the first floor is more private, consisting mainly of bedrooms connected by a corridor lit by a ceiling skylight that offers glimpses of the sky. Tall, floor-to-ceiling wooden doors amplify the verticality and spaciousness of the area.
The bathrooms blend handcrafted charm with modernity, utilizing cement finishes and softly colored hydraulic tiles. Skylights in these rooms offer daylight and ventilation, supporting the home’s passive design and creating a serene, spa-like vibe.
The rooftop surprises as a secluded haven. Accessed via a motorized glass-and-metal framework that illuminates the stairway, this area features an outdoor kitchen and lounge set amidst planters. Despite the proximity of neighboring buildings, this space offers a private, garden-like atmosphere, providing a tranquil retreat for the family.
