given most parents have been housebound with their kids during these snow/ice days, would it be unreasonable to suggest CSD have a protocol for at-home assignments so that these days aren’t a complete loss?

at FAVE lots of the homework questions (as well as the answers) I see is pulled from websites.
a daily email that included some focused learning activity would be a good thing, even if it didn’t count toward the 180-days of school requirement.

This is a great idea. A protocol in place would ensure that all students get assignments. This is especially important at the high school level. It may be happening already but it would be nice if parents could say “Go check your first class email account (or Managebac, ugh, or whatever). I know there’s work there.”

Our girl’s teacher at FAVE did send one in to us about an hour ago. I am thankful for her taking that extra step too!

Distance learning might be one way to go on a season like this….

My kids came home with a week’s worth of assignments on Monday.

It does seem like a lot of teachers are making the effort to enable some distance learning.

My son’s 4th grade teacher is posting to her blog with suggested activities and she sent home extra work to be completed over the next couple of weeks in anticipation of the snow days. Another 4th grade teacher is assigning tests on Edmodo to allow her class to complete the terms assignments. Optional but very useful.

My 7th grader has a project due tomorrow and her teachers (the project covers two subjects) have posted all the resources necessary to accomplish it on Managebac so I believe it’s still expected that they turn it in online by tomorrow.

Thank you about the project still being due. Enough said.

My high schooler wasn’t given any extra work, so she got a written list of projects from me. Must be the teacher in me since I am emailing all my students (not CSOD) today with extra work! First up is “find a summer job”. If anyone has a lead/idea on local summer jobs for 16 years olds (other than fast food), we’d appreciate it! (Next up is “teach mom how to work the new scanner so we can scan dad’s childhood photos”.)

I would like to know if school will be cancelled on Friday, or if it is ok to eat the Valentine candy hanging around the house…..

With this school leadership, who have canceled school due to “cold” and from yesterday “rain”; I would say the kids are out until week after next.

I am so sick of these types of comments. They are not constructive and demonstrate zero understanding of the position the schools have been in with this.

@Nelliebelle1197, I completely agree! Look at what Dr. Edwards has helped make this school system, one of the most desirable in the state. Do you think she wants to close school or takes the decision lightly? I’m positive that she consults local school superintendents as well as state officials when necessary before making any decisions.. Prior to this winter and the days missed in the January 2011 storm, how many times has CSD called off school? Almost never! Quit being so critical of decisions you don’t fully understand and appreciate the fact that you live in a school district that is so amazing!!!

It’s not just about road conditions within the city. They have to consider staffers who live outside of the city, who may have children attending other school systems.

In the north they have built in snow days. Decatur should use the week-long February (winter) break that way. Parents will know that they should not plan big trips that week because those days will replace snow (or cold or possible ice) days as necessary. The idea of having another week off next week because it’s too late to use those days now is frustrating.

I think a lot will depend on the Governor’s State of Emergency. I think that was why all public systems closed on Tuesday

      • At Home in Decatur says:
        February 12, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Exactly, no public or governmental agency had a choice but to close.

Can’t we just be honest and admit that this is all Obama’s fault? He said we could keep our school days if we like them. He lied!

        • DEM says:
          February 12, 2014 at 4:40 pm

Not at all. Closing school is no big deal. Since Obamacare has officially freed us all from the need to work for a living, our kids have no need for education. They can now pursue their dreams of becoming idle government dependents!
