Admittedly I’m early, but I’m the first ! It doesn’t take much to entertain me.
Very thankful this week to have Glenn Burns and the storm team keep my family SAFE from the terror of a half-inch of mostly cloudy.
Join student (and teacher) musicians from Decatur High School for a night of your favorite music from back in the day! Four student bands and one teacher band join up for a two-night event that will appeal to the whole family. Come sing, dance, and cheer for the amazing talent from the high school!
Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday Feb. 28 at the PAC
Both shows start at 7 PM, doors open at 6:30
Kid/Student tickets are $5, adult tickets are $7
What and where is the PAC?
Performing Arts Center (not Political Action Committee)
And where is the Performing Arts Center? Is it at the high school?
Yes. It also has the gym. It’s confusing.
So I see that not only is John Kessler leaving the AJC, but they’ve begun running food articles penned by [edited] “Steak” Shapiro. All the Fox Bros. Frito pie in the world cannot bridge the gap between the two.
This is just unbelievably shocking and sad news. I had no idea that the AJC was even still in business!
I’m still wiping coffee off my screen after opening that AJC article.
I just went to the AJC website because y’all made it sound like it might be amusing at least, if not informative. Spent 2-3 minutes (an eternity) trying to figure out how to locate and recognize the actual news of the day–any news, I wasn’t picky–and then gave up. What a joke that site is.
It’s the Clipper, with the added benefit of occasional disembodied voices emerging from videos you can’t find. Glued together with small snippets of content aggregated from other sources.
You can always locate the latest Bobbi Kristina update, though.
I think one Lewis Grizzard’s books was titled, “Aim low, boys! They’re riding Shetlands!”
I see more and more of those rolling blue trash-can style recycling bins around town and I’m thinking about getting one. Most people seem to have the largest of the 3 sizes. That big rolling bin seems like overkill and way to much space for a normal household. Thoughts anyone?
I buy tons of stuff online (including groceries) and fill up my blue rolling bin every single week. I’m so glad I purchased it when I moved here.
It is sort of comically large. And the lid doesn’t close completely so when you roll it down your driveway it sounds like you’re leading an erratic drumline. But it works fine and it’s better than two almost completely cracked-in-half bins. And there are weeks when it’s nice that it’s that big to throw in a large box to be recycled and not have to worry about the rain.
The cardboard box factor is the only thing that might convince me to get the biggest size. Otherwise, I’m thinking the middle size would do the job and be much more manageable. Decisions, decisions…
The middle size has been fine for us and we have a fair amount of boxes. On the very rare occasions we have too many to fit, I flatten them and put them on top of the bin.
Best place to buy them? I’m thinking Father’s Day gift but not sure where to hide it. One of the children’s rooms ought to work. We’ll disguise it as a pile of clothes. Not really a disguise.
You are going to buy your father a trash can? As a gift? Really?
No, my husband. Is that not a good gift? Would birthday be better? 🙂
I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but I don’t think a trash can is a good gift idea – for anybody/any occasion
Yeah, and it’s hard to hide. Although I thought the kid’s room was awfully clever.
I have a regular sized non-rolling one that I picked up for $10 at Home Depot.
They’re white and gold, not blue
(because that needed more internet time…)
Hah!
+1 LOL!
We are excited about our neighbor on Huron that leaves the big blue bin out on the curb all week long. All. Week. Long. Every. Week.
That child is not learning his lesson.
maybe they are offering it to someone for free???
Sounds like a good place to deposit your doggy poop bags.
Home depot sells them.
When the city first allowed recycling in anything other than the small city bins, you had to purchase the large dark green wheeled bins from the recycling company they contracted with. I believe that was in order to make sure it was configured for use with their trucks, so they could be lifted and dumped. The big size is a bit much, but if you end up with a lot of cardboard boxes it’s a good idea.
“Manuel’s Properties is selling about 1.6 acres, including the Manuel’s [Tavern] building — a Poncey Highland landmark — to developer Green Street Properties.”
“Manuel’s will remain — in a refurbished condition — and it will still be operated by the Maloof family.”
Details over at Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Heard this on the way in to work this morning- I can’t imagine a “new” Manuel’s. I hope somehow it manages to keep its landmark identity.
Over on the Manuel’s Tavern Facebook page there is a detailed explanation of the refurbishing/renovation plans. I liked what I read.
I like what I read too. It seems like they are retaining a lot of control, a long-term lease, and a financial opportunity to update a seriously 100+ year old building (I didn’t realize it was that old). It sounds like they want to make the “new” restaurant restored to be as similar as possible to what we are used to.
Here is the link (the FB post is public). Some people still are acting like he’s selling out to Applebee’s and going to serve only PBR.

Random thoughts for the day:
I’m glad I’m not Phyllis Edwards.
Decaturites sure know their obscure beers.
Nelliebelle has a double lot AND a garage. I’m jealous.
The company that painted the stripes in front of the fire station on Trinity should pay back their fees.
Dos Madres has good food.
DHS’s girl’s basketball team is pretty awesome.
I’m suddenly seeing more grey hairs. Oh well; I’m just glad I still have hair (on my head).
Speaking of quality (and sometimes obscure) beer, I am extremely partial to the large selection of craft beer, ALL SOLD IN SINGLES, at Decatur Wine and Spirits (On Scott between Church and Dekalb Industrial). I usually don’t want 6 (or even 3) of the same beer.
Agreed. I’m guessing this store is overlooked because of the challenging location, but they are an excellent place to do a mix-and-match six pack.
My goto beverage store. There is a back entrance/exit from DeKalb Industrial making shopping a breeze.
“The company that painted the stripes in front of the fire station on Trinity should pay back their fees.”
… the City did it…
I guess I should not tell you the garage is two stories, right?
Does anyone have any experience good or bad with the Shambhala Meditation Center on Church? Real meditation center or cult? They have some programs that look interesting.
I went there a few times several years ago. Before you are allowed to enter the meditation room, they make you take an hour long class to learn the proper “techniques.” I had no issue with that (it’s their place and they can make the rules). However, I did have an issue with the fact that they don’t play background music during the sessions, and the road noise was very distracting to me.
I miss the Decatur DQ.
Agree completely. That one out on Lawrenceville Hwy is just not the same. Decatur ice cream shops are very good, but sometimes I just want my Georgia Mud Fudge Blizzard.
Only one more day to save a few bucks on registration for the 2015 Tour deCatur. It’s on Pi Day this year (3.14.15), which is fitting, since the value of the race can’t be expressed as a simple fraction.
Proceeds benefit Decatur kids via Decatur Education Foundation. Registration: http://www.TourdeCatur.com
Given how popular the IPA thread is, I thought this might be of interest to some: Beer Growler Nation, over in Oak Grove, is closing. 25% off on their remaining beer and other stuff. Email says this will “probably” be their last night.
I always complain there there are never coupons for things you really need…like beer. This is like a beer coupon.
Just got my water bill and it is 2x the regular amount. I am not noticing any leaks. Meanwhile my next door neighbor asked me if I am getting “wind noise” in the pipes as she is. What is the protocol? When/who do I call? Thanks.
Good luck with this! Ours doubled too. If you’re bothered enough to go through archives, the topic of weird water bill fluctuations occurs at least every other month in FFAF.
Water bills are among the most frustrating and hopeless issues that Metro Atlanta residents face. I will not repeat what hundreds of posts have said in this and many other forums. But I now view a water bill like an order from a lord to his serfs–absolute, non-negotiable, imperious, and unfair. Your only alternative is to leave the kingdom.
Not just the billing. Water leaks in a house can be equally frustrating and worse in a condo/apartment. Trying to find the source of a visible leak? That stain on the ceiling could be from another floor up and all the way on the other side of the house.
Yeah, that’s part of the frustration–you don’t know if the county reading or “estimate” is way off or if you have a leak. It can take several plumbers, several stabs at fixing the possible leak, and several visits by the meter readers, including a meter replacement to get close to the truth. Even then you’ll never be sure if you were had by the County or were had by the plumbers or both…..
Check the box in the ground where your water meter is located, and all around it, and between there and your house along the path of the main line, for signs of a leak. Sometimes there is a leak that seeps underground for a long time before becoming obvious on the surface. (Happened to me once, fortunately it was located so as to get fixed on Dekalb County’s nickel. And I was able to get my water bill adjusted without too much hassle.)
Thanks to you all.
One time our almost-double water bill was due to a guest room toilet that was on continual new tank water mode while we were on long vacation. We fixed the tank, and the water bill went back to normal.

Donizetti’s sparkling comic opera, “The Elixir of Love” follows simple yet fervent country bumpkin, Nemorino, who is hopelessly in love with Adina, an independent and attractive yet fickle landowner. With the dashing Sergeant Belcore also competing for Adina’s affections, Nemorino turns in desperation to traveling con man, Doctor Dulcamara and his “elixir of love” (really a bottle of cheap wine). Ducamara’s faux love potion causes a domino effect of hilarious plot twists and surprising romantic turns in this masterpiece of beguiling arias and intoxicating duets.

I understand from one of the victims that there was a rash of car break-ins last night (Saturday night) on E. Howard (the Kimball House parking area).
Terrible news. I wish DPD patrolled that area more. It’s so easy to walk across the tracks and College to get away.
Why would you assume that the persons who broke in would head south across the railroad tracks? I think you should reflect on that assumption.
I think she might have said that because it would be super easy to hide a car or disappear on fairly deserted commercial side streets across the tracks whereas the area towards downtown has more populations and potential witnesses. At least that was MY first thought.
I guess that is one take but I think it is stretching it a bit. I would think it would be pretty exposed to cross the railroad tracks, slide down an embankment and cross four lanes of traffic on E. College.
It’s actually pretty easy to do close to the Carpe Diem space. I see it happen all of the time, but I ASSUME it is probably people going for their Las Brasas fix before they close down.
I used to walk to and from the Freight Room across those tracks all the time. Not hard at all.
Why would you assume I assumed that?
I use that section of the PATH all of the time and often see people crossing. I assume those people are not doing anything nefarious, but I could see how easy it would be for a criminal to sneak away.
Your statement assumed that the criminals headed south. Period. That is fact based on your statement. All I was doing was pointing out that, without facts, one should think it through before assuming criminal elements necessarily come from south of E. College.
No, Curious did not say they DO go south, she/he said it’s an easy escape route. You read more into the statement all by yourself.
I hate it when DM posts turn into these kinds of conversations.
I did not make that assumption, but sorry for upsetting you David.
Looking to get the old Miata painted and looking for recommendations.

Anyone know what happened on the beer bill today? Wild Heaven posted an ego stroke to Lt. Gov. Cagle, suggesting he’d come around.
I saw posts from a couple other breweries indicating the same. Sounds like the Lt. Gov has maybe decided to stand up to the wholesalers and, instead of letting the bill die, work toward a compromise. That would be great. Waiting to see a first hand report . . .
If you have the patience for Reddit, you can follow the beer bill doings at reddit (dot) com/r/atlbeer/ And if you believe what you read there, it sounds as if the committee will take this up on Thurs.
Thanks guys. Put up a post about it. We can aggregate other updates there.
