    What’s Open? Thursday Open Thread

    Decatur Metro | January 30, 2014 | 8:51 am

Schools are still closed, but the City of Decatur is opening at noon and it seems like many more businesses will be open today, based my totally random observations.

Use this thread to report delayed openings and closings of businesses/government functions.

There are 3 cars in the lot. 2 are definitely associated with the bootcamp. None of the inflatables are blown up. No sign on the door. Maybe call in a while, but it doesn’t look good for bouncing today.

My husband is from New Zealand and we get our kids down there pretty regularly. One thing I cannot get used to is the fact that they actually have pizzas with f’d up ingredients like potatoes and mayo and mustard and beets and apricots. Most sauce is more BBQ than traditional red. It is like they took a regular old dinner and threw it on a pizza.

          https://hellpizza.com/nz/order/44

The local Dominoes does the apricot pizza.

I REALLY hope we do what’s best for our small hamlet and let the kids go to school. I’ve done some driving around and things look pretty good. I know teachers have to get here as well, but I’m sure they’re calling them to make sure enough can get here safely.

        • nelliebelle1197 says:
          January 30, 2014 at 7:19 pm

This comment has been bothering me for a while. Why is it best? Because it is best for you? There is no heat at Oakhurst, most teachers don’t live in Decatur (in fact, one of my daughter’s teachers lives in Marietta, where a lot of hilly side streets are ice coated still), and ice is expected to re form over night in many areas. What is best for MY child is not to be warehoused in a building with no heat and a good portion of staff missing because they could not get child care or make it in safely. I rather the school take a look at the broader picture and make a decision rather than a bunch of overreacting parents. I don’t trust Phyllis Edwards on a lot of things, but this one I hand to them. You think they WANT to close school?

      • Rick Julian says:
        January 30, 2014 at 6:04 pm

we were just at Fellini’s on McLendon, and while the streets are mostly clear, where they’ve been protected by shade they’re still quite icy. across the street at Dr. Bombays, the sidewalk was practically sheeted in ice and dangerous—there really ought to be a law about retailers clearing their sidewalks.

I’m 60/40 in favor of closing on Friday because of the meaningful number of ice patches that will still be on the road in the morning. It will all be gone by afternoon, but dems de breaks.

    29. brianc says:
      January 30, 2014 at 5:28 pm

Not surprising really, considering the ordeal many parents, teachers, and students went through this week. Lots of abandoned vehicles (and ice) still on the roads, too.

Isn’t our school system small enough that there could be a phone tree or something? I like thinking that Suzanne Kennedy is personally calling each staff member at CHELC to make sure they made it home safely, don’t need anything, and are ok to drive back to work.

      • nelliebelle1197 says:
        January 30, 2014 at 7:12 pm

Roads are not clear in the ‘burbs and most metro systems are closed. Think about what that means since most teachers don’t live Decatur.

No, but I actually know people who live in Cobb, north DeKalb and Fulton. I was hearing from them about the conditions in their neighborhoods.

      • Decaturmom2 says:
        January 30, 2014 at 7:59 pm

Not an over reaction when you consider refreezing and the number of faculty and staff who commute. School is not a babysitting service. Would your child benefit from being in class with no heat and a school full of subs? Already have staff who weren’t able to make it home Tues. bc they stayed to work a full day despite the weather and traffic conditions.

        • Ben says:
          January 31, 2014 at 9:13 am

I don’t think it’s because of roads. I bet it’s because Atlanta PS and Dekalb PS are closed, so many teachers (who have kids in these systems) may have to find subs.

That Oakhurst ES does not have heat should not be relevant- you don’t shut down a whole system because one school has facility issues. If anything, delay opening for that school until you can fix it or close that school altogether.

What about Saturday School for DHS?

      • At Home in Decatur says:
        January 30, 2014 at 7:32 pm

Don’t know but that’s an idea. Saturday School for DHS students for the rest of the year? There’s a lot of material in AP and IB classes to master before the final tests/assessments. Five days of school missed in one month is a substantial handicap for most students. There’s whiz kids for whom it won’t matter but most of our kids are bright, not speed readers with photographic memories and analytic sophistication.

      • Smith says:
        January 30, 2014 at 7:40 pm

Lots of athletics already scheduled on Saturdays. How about going to school that week in Feb instead?

        • No Decaf says:
          January 30, 2014 at 7:56 pm

Oh I hope not. Big trip already planned, tickets bought. I’m okay with going later in the summer, but I don’t see how that helps with preparing for the standardized tests.

        • At Home in Decatur says:
          January 30, 2014 at 9:25 pm

There’s often DHS trips going on during February break, e.g. to Spain or D.C., college fairs, juniors are often traveling to visit colleges, seniors are looking at the schools to which they’ve been admitted. Ditto for the April break. Unrefundable airline tickets have been bought way in advance. Not mention bonafide family vacations. It’s a toughie, making up missed days in high school.
