City Commission Meeting Still On For Tonight, Tree Ordinance Being Discussed
Decatur Metro | January 6, 2014The City of Decatur has posted a note on its website alerting residents that the first commission meeting of the year will happen as planned this evening at 7:30p.
The actual meeting will be a light load with the annual election of the mayor, mayor pro-tem and the appointment of the city attorney and municipal court judges.
What will be of the most interest to all will be the 6:00p work session regarding a draft of an updated tree ordinance. The current tree moratorium is in effect until January 24th anticipating this update. There’s no document on the city website yet, but we’ve reached out to the city and we’ll pass that along to you as soon as we have it in hand.

The work session starts at 6:00pm. It will be shown via streaming video via the City’s web site.

So riddle me this….
How is anyone supposed to form an informed opinion about the proposed tree ordinance when the City, though they have promised much in terms of getting the draft out to all interested parties, has yet to make the draft ordinance available for review for the meeting being held tonight?
Or is the lack of an informed citizenry the point of the process…?
The ordinance is not being discussed in the commission meeting; it’s being discussed in the preceding work session where the commissioners will review and question the draft in an open forum. Their input is the last step before the draft is released for public review. The commission’s actual consideration doesn’t occur until their meeting on Jan. 21.
