Best Place to Get Seafood in Atlanta?
Decatur Metro | September 11, 2012 | 11:23 amWhere’s the best place to purchase seafood in this landlocked city?
Sit-down restaurant, takeout or grocery store. Where do you buy your sea creatures?

YDFM for me.
Why does YDFM not scale the fish before filleting it for sale??? Try scaling a fish filet, especially blu e fish. I’ve complained and I still get scales, ESP on the salmon. H Mart is much better.
To have it prepared, Crawfish Shack. Probably YDFM for DIY.
I’ve always liked the seafood at Wahoo, though I wouldn’t claim it’s the best. Kyma in Buckhead is probably the best I’ve had in years, but it’s quite expensive. The octopus appetizer is amazing though. Seafood is definitely not Atlanta’s strong suit.
The Optimist
Recently ate at Kyma and The Optimist. No contest! Kyma is fading and optimist is wonderful.
Sawicki’s tends to have some very nice seafood on hand.
I hate seafood more than Token hates cheese…
Clearly, a mamber of the barbarian horde has no business commenting on the delicacies of seafood. *hmph*
It’s a mystery to me, too. But no matter, just means more for the rest of us.
True dat. I just realized I misspelled “member”– so much for DM giving us an edit function! LOL!
Then why weigh in? DM didn’t ask if you liked it. He asked where you go to get it.
While Southern Seafood on Lawrenceville Highway is nothing to look at from the street, the fish and seafood are fresh and the service is top notch.
I second Southern Seafood! Good quality and good price. Just no place to eat there, so I get it to-go and bring home. (They can boil seafood there, so it’s all ready to eat!).
Southern Seafood is a great place to find fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
Another vote for Southern Seafood, and also enjoy Lure, the new seafood place in Midtown. Still, I’d have to say my go-to place is Whole Foods– their quality is just superior (although you do pay for it).
Second the quality on WF. And appearance.
YDFM in general. Sawicki’s has awesome scallops at times. Oddly enough, I think Ted’s does a great job with salmon and shrimp.
OMG, have you had their fish sandwich? I could not believe how delicious, fresh, and crispy/tender the fillet on it was– I had to take that baby off the bun just to enjoy it on its own!
Has anyone tried the seafood market in Kirkwood? I forget the name but it’s relatively new.
Atlanta Fish Market. Definitely pricey, but well worth it.
It might not be the “best” by experts’ opinions, but for awesome friendly service, price and, I think, quality, I love Harbor Bar & Fish House right in Decatur.
Ditto Southern Seafood to take home and eat. We’re also loving Harbour Bar.
How were the raw oysters at Harbour Bar this year? I didn’t get around to trying them. I have nearly always had really good ones at Six Feet Under (a time or two I’ve seen them get a little sloppy with the shucking), but don’t know where else to go.
You can usually find some fine oysters at The Shed at Glenwood.
Six Feet Under. Yum.
What’s the name of the really good crawfish place on Buford Highway? (Or is that the Southern Seafood place everyone is talking about?)
Crawfish Shack is on Buford Highway. Southern Seafood is on Lawrenceville Highway in the Rehoboth neighborhood at the intersections of Frazier, Mclendon, and Lawrenceville Highway.
Wahoo is my favorite restaurant. For a while 246 had the whole baked fish that was awesome.
Goin Coastal
Yes!
DIY: Southern Seafood or Whole Paycheck. Learn how to sear your own scallops and you will never order them “out” again.
For eat in po boys or carry out crawfish: Crawfish Shack, although beware the wait for ultra freshness — they don’t shuck the oysters until you order them and when the line is long then your wait also will be. There apparently was a shooting in the pool hall next door a few days ago – yipes.
Six Feet Under for fish stew and the family loves the fried baskets like you’d get at the beach.
Pyng Ho for seafood-centric chinese.
Like Napoleon’s food and service better than Harbor Bar but hoping HB smooths out. (have had so-so food and really bad food there so far.)
Rays is good for all sorts of dishes.
I heard recently that Blue Ribbon Grill had great grouper but haven’t been.
Have heard of Goin Coastal — why is it so good?
Kyma has fabulous seafood.
Fontaine’s is still awesome in my mind for oysters and New Orleans fare.
I was really impressed with Lure. They also have great cocktails. I don’t like scallops, but was at a client dinner and we ordered the to share – I really liked them! They were seared and then sliced. Will def. be going back for more!
Still want to try The Optimist. I was underwhelmed by Goin Coastal, but Hubbs enjoyed it…I may have just ordered wrong.
We need to try this place on Lawrenceville Hwy…might do that tonight.
We also enjoy Harbor Bar and Wahoo.
Anyone here buy fish for homemade sushi?
I’m interested because I took a great class on sushi making at Cook’s Warehouse last week, and the chef-instructor recommended YDFM, Buford Highway Farmers Market or Super H Mart. (His take on WF seafood for sushi purposes: insufficient turnover in the store for it to be really fresh).
YDFM offers sushi grade tuna and I think it is really good. I don’t think I’ve tried any of their other fish raw. Haven’t been to the other stores you mentioned.
If you get lazy and don’t want to bother with the rice, etc., here’s a tasty treat. You can make tuna poke by chopping the tuna in a 1/2″ (or larger) dice, and mixing with a dressing of lime juice, soy sauce, honey, sriracha, grated fresh ginger, roasted garlic and a splash of rice vinegar. Excellent served with a side of wakame (also available at YDFM) and believe it or not, papadums on which to place the tuna poke a bite at a time. YDFM offers these in the sugar aisle and they are quick to toast up in a dry skillet just seconds per side; store extras in the freezer.
Crawfish Shack. Freshest fish possible, pick your filet on ice. Where else can you get a large, lightly-battered, flaky grouper, four jumbo shrimp, a spicy corn on cob and fries or slaw … for $8.99? Shoot, you pay more at a coastal beach shack for that, and the fish is just as fresh.Cooks are from New Orleans.
Haven’t had it in a few years (pesky geography) but the fish in hot chili oil at Tasty China was fantastic every time I’ve had it. I think i tried it the first time at one the Frank Ma places (the one next to the Chinese Cultural Center on New Peachtree). His was even better, but I don’t think he retired.
When Tasty China opens it’s Emory Village location, it’s the first thing I’m going to get. I mean, other than the glass of ice water.
