Any news as to whether Touch-a-Truck will be held or not tomorrow? I’m worried the weather will rain it out.
If the weather turns bad, they would likely re-schedule it like they did last year.
Does anyone know if/when Active Living might announce that Touch-A-Truck is rescheduled?
The weather forecast for tomorrow is not promising.
They’ll probably make that decision by noon today – you could call them, you know.
FLASH MOB FRISBEE!!! Renfroe Field 3:00 Sunday. Bring water, your frisbee and two shirts: one white and another dark. We will put together another game of Ultimate. All ages and skill levels welcome!
This still happening after all of the rain? Never played but have been meaning to find a pick up game to try it out.
Hey, we’ve got a group of 8th grade Renfroe kids that want to play Ultimate.
We missed this, when will it be happening again? Thanks!
It didn’t actually happen on Sunday. My son went over but found only 2 other players on hand along with one parent who he said seemed to be an organizer of the game. They mentioned trying again next Sunday at 3pm.
I guess most people figured the wind was too strong and field was probably wet after the Friday/Saturday storms.
MrFixIt – please post on next week’s FFAF if you can tell us more .
We will have at least four boys, possibly more, at RMS Sunday at 3 to play frisbee.
T
We are hoping that the weather will be nice tomorrow, but will make a decision about Touch a Truck around lunchtime. I will let DM know as well as post on our blog http://www.beactivedecatur.com. Keep your fingers crossed that the rain goes away!
Thank you, Cheryl! Fingers crossed.
We had to go ahead and cancel Touch A Truck due to the threat of severe weather. Rain date is April 21.
Prudent decision Cheryl. With the potential severe weather, it might have turned into CLUTCH A TRUCK…or DODGE A TRUCK…
That gave me a good laugh!
Thanks Cheryl.
I figured that I wasn’t the only one wondering about this, and I was right!
My five year old has his fingers AND toes crossed!
I suggest the A&C Thursday be moved to Monday…It may compete with FFAF a bit and after the weekend of movie watching and book reading folks may have their opinions fresh in their head and fired up to talk about it…just a thought.
Plus its something to look forward to on Monday’s…and nobody likes Monday’s!
I don’t think Thursdays the right day either. Monday is an interesting idea for the reasons you describe. May have to wait a week to get it started though. I don’t think we can do another this coming Monday, right? Well, I guess we COULD. Doesn’t cost anything!
+1
Does anybody have an insight or information on the school start/end times for next year? I don’t want to set off a powder keg of opinions (though I doubt it can be avoided); just the facts, ma’am!
the schedule is posted on the CSS website
the schedule is posted on the CSD website
As far as I can see, the only start times listed on the CSD website right now are the current ones. They’ve had a committee doing opinion surveys and offering recommendations to the school board about any possible changes for 2012-2013. Unless that is listed somewhere that I’m not seeing–?
As far as I know, the start times for the next school year are still being discussed and no decision has been made.
I wasn’t there but I know that the committee’s report was presented to the Board and the Board asked questions of committee members. I’m not sure if the last step is for an administrative decision or if the Board has to approve that administrative decision.
I was confused by the link to 2012-2013 approved calendar. I don’t understand why they have that.
So people know when school starts in the fall, right?
And so we can all plan vacations during those sweet, sweet off-season rates at Fall Break and Winter Break.
Starts in the fall? That would be summer! August 2, right?
And for some of us, the September break is smack dab in the middle of the busiest time of the year for work with lots of business travel. Sigh.
Wow – I totally misunderstood the topic. I thought is was start and end dates instead of times. DUH! I thought that the posted calendar was just a draft. (Smacking myself on the forhead now)
Are we living a charmed life in this city?
Just for fun, get out a calculator and multiply the first seven prime numbers:
1 * 2 * 3 * 5 * 7 * 11 * 13 = ???
Excellent!
laughed aloud. Thanks.
So that’s what our realtor meant when she said we were buying in a prime location.
Awesome! Perhaps that could be the new slogan: Decatur: Prime Location! And t-shirts could just list the mathematical equation.
WE HAVE A WINNER!!!
Agreed! Love it! Does this make us all nerds? A fraternity brother (Pi Kappa Phi) of mine in college had a cap that he wore all the time. It just had “3.14” on it. He said it was his “Pi Kap.” We loved him but, alas, he was a bit of a nerd. I guess it takes one to know one.
+++1!
I would totally wear that t-shirt!
I want that t-shirt!!!!!!!!!!!1
awesome!
Wait! (Debbie Downer here:) One is not a prime, is it?
No worries, though. Your fun fact still works if you modify it to be “first 6 primes” – right?
– guy who sadly sometimes does this stuff for fun…even ran it in the Google for extra laughs
6 primes, 4 square miles of awesome.
Re 1 not being a prime number: That just seemed intuitively wrong so I checked it out on Wikipedia and, sure enough, some dumb “fundamental theorem of arithmetic” requires it to be excluded as a prime. Effete intellectualism! One was considered a prime number by many mathematicians until 1956ish. I don’t care what they now say. I cannot divide 1 by any whole number other than 1 and come up with a whole number. Hence it is an AHID Prime.
Talking about the Arts…went to the Decatur High School “Start Celebrating Creativity at Decatur High School” yesterday evening. We sure have some creative students attending DHS.
i do so want to be a fan of kroger but after yet another painful shopping experience at the claustrophobic kroger i am reminded why i am not
They’re going to have to rethink that new checkout arrangement. It’s awful.
I don’t think I’m a big fan of the checkouts either. Seems to get awfully congested.
I always think it’s going to be hemorrhoidal but the line always diminishes rather quickly.
The weirdest thing is the off-to-the-side placement of the debit/credit card reader at each cashier that not only makes it impossible to see the display of what your stuff costs, it basically forces you to climb into the adjacent person’s cart just to get to it. Needs a little rethinking’.
+1
If they’d set the stanchions to direct folks to full vs. self checkout, it’d go much faster. There’s usually an available self checkout, but folks seem reluctant to ask the person ahead if they can get by to use it. Sometimes folks are just too darned polite! :0)
What exactly is the harm of making a right turn out of the “pay-at-the-window” lane at the water department? It is prohibited, complete with a sign, right turn arrow, red circle w/slash.
It takes three lefts to return to west side of Decatur. Hmmm…..
Just goes to show you 3 lefts do make a right!
Nice
Another math affirmation about Decatur, kinda.
3(Left) = Right
So I’m not sure a lot of folks know just why I use the name “lumpintheroad.” It’s because shortly before I started posting on DM I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I actually have (sort of) fond memories of perusing the site while going though chemo in 2008.
Anyway, my wife and I were profiled on CNN this week for a Dr. Sanjay Gupta segment on male infertility (related to/complicated by my cancer). You can check it out here:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2012/02/29/pkg-gupta-male-infertility.cnn
Wow. That’s definitely not the reason I would have guessed for the name. Congratulations on the pregnancy and here’s to hoping for a clean bill of health for many years to come for you, Lindsay and the baby!
thank you for sharing that story….and i’m so glad for your healthy, happy ending! keep us posted on the arrival of the ‘lil lumps…
😀
Good of you to share your story… Hope and Joy
That story’s nutty, fer sure. Here’s wishing you a healthy future.
Don’t make me get teste with you.
HA!
Let’s just say going through testicular cancer gives you a well-rounded sense of humor.
Congrats!
Congratulations, for everything!
Thanks for sharing the video. Congrats on everything!
VERY VERY cool indeed. After all you and Lindsay have been through, those boys are gonna be two of the most appreciated and loved (and spoiled) kids in the world. God bless.
We certainly feel that way, and you’re right, I’m sure we will spoil them rotten. But we’ll also be capable of laying down a pretty epic guilt trip under the right circumstances. “I had a nut cut off and another sliced open to bring you two into this world and you can’t eat your peas?!”
😉
Congrats, and um, start sleeping now!
It’s funny how everyone says that, as though we could somehow bank sleep. But we’ll do our best!
I’m almost afraid to ask what the problem was with the train last night (2:45 am or so). I can’t imagine what would make that amount of noise necessary – unless there was a dangerous situation. It woke up 3/4 of my family.
Does anyone know?
Whereabouts on the track? We live less than 100 yds from the tracks near Thinking Man’s and we were 0-3 in human wake ups. Of course, I’m not sure that’s a good thing or a bad thing that we didn’t hear anything.
The train seemed to be coming from/located west of the Atlanta crossing. (Though I wouldn’t bet on it due to my sleepy and crabby state.) It was a very loud extended whistle that was repeated incessantly. It made me wonder if there was something on the tracks.
Does anyone know if no. 246 has gotten the sound-dampening equipment and/or whether the high noise level has been reduced? I’m thinking of having the fam take me there for my b’day but I’m afraid it will turn off a couple of folks if they can’t hear anything above all the background noise.
They have gotten it and it is somewhat quieter, though it was really just a shift from super loud to sorta loud. Old Tinnitus Heads will still need to concentrate.
Funny that you bring this up today. I was wondering this too because we’re looking for a place to go for the anniversary dinner (ten years together even if the gov’t doesn’t recognize it!). Many of the reviews at Open Table mentioned how loud 246 is and they were recent posts (last week I believe). So, we decided not to go but I do feel like we’re missing out since I hear how good the food is. I just didn’t want to mess up one of the few evenings we can actually get out without kids, you know? Anyway, I’d love to hear people’s opinions too. Oh, and happy birthday!
You can’t go wrong with either Iberian Pig or Cakes and Ale for an anniversary dinner!
I highly recommend Iberian Pig. We have celebrated our last two anniversaries there.
Go for lunch or non-Friday/Saturday nights. Much quieter.
Ten Years! Congratulations! This celebration calls for the magic of Cafe Alsace!
(And be sure to order the chocolate cake. It’ll have y’all mmmmmmmmmming! )
Thanks! And happy anniversary to y’all! I can also recommend Iberian Pig and Cakes & Ale, but would add Cafe Lily as another option (their pinchitos followed by the lemon sponge cake are on my “last meal on earth” menu in the event of a pending apocalypse, although Iberian Pig’s calamari may make the cut, too).
Went there on Valentine’s Day. The sound deadening material has been installed and it wasn’t terribly loud from the voices and activity but the background music was too loud. Could be just a generational thing.
Oooh, Happy Anniversary, New Scott! The last time we went, it did seem a bit quieter (and it’s always quieter in the bar than in the main dining room). The quietest we’ve ever found it was when we sat outside…go figure! I don’t think you’ll regret it if you go.
Thanks everyone! I hope you all have a great weekend (despite not touching trucks).
The wife and I previewed 246 and Parkers on Ponce with a view towards a reasonably quiet spot for dinner with the in-laws. Parkers won for ability to have a conversation (and we had a lovely time with the in-laws), but we really loved the food and service at both!!
Eh? My ears are still ringing from my last visit. We are going tomorrow, so I can update you!
I’d appreciate an update! Thanks! And enjoy your dinner!
Sooo, SR, we had an amazing meal. The volume is somewhat better. While it’s still shouting territory, that was an improvement over our previous visit, during which we literally could not carry on a conversation and even skipped dessert just to escape. If your dining cohorts are comfortable in “trendy” places with some volume, I think you’ll be fine. You still may want to consider going a bit off-peak. But the food is worth it.
Thanks! We had a similar experience our first time so your assessment is very helpful! I’m glad they’ve improved it even if it’s not quite what I was hoping. We may not be hip enough for the “trendy” noise levels, but we are going on a weeknight so I think I’ll risk it.
And thanks to all the others who responded and for FFAF giving me a forum!
I’m sure this question has been asked in the last couple of weeks but I can’t remember the answer. The new tea shop on Ponce – is it open yet or does it have an opening date?
Still not open. Not sure what the ETA is, but I saw a wheelbarrow outside today with what looked like “rubble” in it. I’m guessing that means it might still be a little while.
I poked my head in the open door earlier this week. I think they’re close to opening, days, maybe a week or two.
I hope it’s soon. I’m a bit of a tea enthusiast and am just thrilled that there will be a tea shop right up the street from my home. No more driving out to teavana or other tea shops. Though today I was browsing around at Homegrown and they had some loose leaf tea that smelled excellent. I bought a couple of tins and can’t wait to try them out tonight.
DM, thanks for the new posting features such as delete and edit. Helps me correct a lot of mistakes before it’s too late!
I’m glad to know I am not the only one who thinks some restaurants are too loud. Tt’s not always the talking, The music is no longer “in the background” at many places and I feel like I’m having to scream to have a normal conversation. I guess this is part of the whole getting old thing. My husband and I will try to decide where to eat and after the first few rounds of “It don’t matter” and the names of a few places are tossed out, “too loud” has been added to the list of potential strikes.
Shout out to Ali at Med. Cafe (old Tokyo Joe locale). He has the place looking pretty good (compared to his old Avondale digs), and quickly prepared some delish falafel. Plus I got a combo of falafel, gyro and fountain drink for just at 7$. And he’s still super nice.
Is there (surely there must be?) a good Thai place that delivers in Decatur? Or Indian? I’m trying to branch out from pizza and chinese food for nights when I just can’t face the oven/stove.
Top Spice and Siam both deliver to Decatur.
Thanks Nubbs!
Everyone ok after last night’s weather shenanigans? I like our tiered approach in Decatur. While one child was sobbing that tornados were coming (and bringing Gatorade and a bicycle helmet into the basement. The heck with the rest of the family–this child was surviving!), it was nice to be able to say that we hadn’t gotten a call from the National Weather Whatchamacallit yet. Then when the calls came twice and we received a flying leap into our bed (king size luckily), it was nice to be able to say that they were about thunderstorms and flooding and no warning siren had gone off.
I like Decatur. (That’s the best I can do for a slogan. It’s not catchy and it doesn’t capture all the nuances of the positives and negatives of life here, but it’s true.)
We are in good shape over here – all was fine until Hubbs woke me at 1:20 to watch the radar. An hour later, he let me go back to sleep. Baby Nubbs slept thru the whole thing.
Good for Baby Nubbs! Next time it storms, I’ll trade you him for Stanley. I have a 60-pound scaredy dog who whines and jumps on top of me at the first hint of thunder or even strong winds.
Deal – but the next day, you will have to read that Moo book 100 times to Toddler Nubbs. Still his favorite book.
No problem! You know, when I picked out that book at LSOS, Mrs. J_T’s first reaction was “Are you *trying* to make them hate you?” Glad he enjoyed it!
Our scaredy dog wedged herself between the toilet and wall- I think she has an internal barometric storm intensity radar.
After reading mostly positive reviews of the Pure service station, I brought my car in for some much-needed maintenance. Joel and Leo made it run like new, with friendly, polite service. They definitely went above and beyond. The next day, Nan called to make sure everything was as expected, and encouraged me to come in if anything didn’t seem right. I highly recommend the Pure station if you need any kind of service on your car.
Should one call ahead and make an appointment? What are the hours there? I keep meaning to get gas there to try the experience, which so many have recommended, but often it is closed when I am out and about.
Here’s the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pure-Station-Decatur-Georgia/136556583089492
Attention all Decatur Moms: If you get the AJC comics, check out the Zits! That would be us–medals and all!
I want to give a shout out to Big Tex for the awesome brunch and live music yesterday. They were hit or miss for me over the past year as far as food goes. I either really liked what I had or really didn’t. I always liked the atmosphere, the great staff and the skee ball lanes in the game room (skee ball is my crack). I think one reason many have been disappointed is because everyone was expecting our own Fox Bros and that’s not what we got. However, they have changed the menu and certain items from Fox Bros have made an appearance (fried pickle/jalapeno chips & smoked wings). They did away with the less then remarkable tacos and kept the awesome roast chicken and roasted cream corn. They have really great burgers, appetizers and salads. Yesterday they had a bluegrass band playing and the place was filled with families and couples enjoying the music, great brunch menu (I recommend the corned beef hash and spicy bloody marys) and the gameroom. I was glad to see them busy as I don’t want to see another business in Decatu fail. So, if you have yet to try Big Tex or was not pleased the last time you were there, I say give the new menu a go. I also learned they had other types of live music Friday and Saturday. The layout works for both folks who want to sit in the front room where the music is louder (but not so loud that I couldn’t talk to my husband) or in the second room/bar area where the music is more in the background.
Agreed, Big Tex has made big improvements from their first few months. I had the brunch special yesterday- a special bennedict with homemade english muffin, delicious moist sliced smoked ham from fox bros., collard greens, poached eggs and their potlicker sauce instead of hollendaise— I’m pleading with them to make that a regular item, it was so great.
I absolutely love the sides at Big Tex. The Mexican corn on on the cob? Off the chain.
