“Gaudy” Holiday Lights Tour of Decatur Suggestions
Decatur Metro | December 19, 2011Kristin writes in…
Hi! We’re taking the kids “gaudy gazing” tonight after dinner and wanted some info on what streets around Decatur are the most festive! I saw the post about Adair street on FFAF …… perhaps others would like more info as well? Thanks!

If you’re not limiting yourself to the City proper, check this in unincorporated Decatur:

There’s an excellent one on Lockwood terrace, I think in the 300-block.
lockwood one just one a ‘decatur decorate’ award….very grizwald:)! but the kids love it!
A family on Oak Grove Drive in Leafmore (Just south of Lavista, east of Clairmont, behind the Walgreens and The Grove restaurant) has an incredible display…they even set up a website for it: http://www.christmasinthegrove.net/
If you continue down Oak Grove and take a right on Leafmore, you’ll see several more full-on displays before you reach Clairmont again.
Last night we spent an hour our so weaving through the Great Lakes neighborhood. Several streets had set up luminaries for Advent and that in combination with the light displays was quite lovely.
There’s a decked out house at the back entrance to Glenlake Park that will definitely make the kiddies ohhhh and ahhhh. There are several other houses back there that are also decorated up nicely, including a massive decorative tree with flashing ornaments, super pretty.
Not sure if this neighborhood still decks thing out, but Murphy St., off E. Ponce de Leon Ave. between Valley Brook and McClendon, used to be amazing. Over-the-top decorations on small, shtogun-style homes on a narrow, predominately working class street. It’s about a mile past DeKalb Farmers market on the left; think there’s a tatoo parlor on the corner, too, if you’re thinking of getting a new one for Christmas!
I remember that place from way back in the day! I don’t think that first house does it any more — I wonder if the others do.
think i’ll drive by tonite after my midweek DeKalb Frmrs Mkt stop & see.
Mead Rd in Oakhurst is quite festive.
Not in Decatur, but Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is set to Christmas lights on Monroe near Piedmont Park. You can tune your radio to listen to it when you pull up in front of the house. Hope it’s still there this year.
It is
The house on the corner of E Lake Dr and Ridgecrest Rd is my favorite. Visible from several angles.
I love the trees that welcome you on Wilton, too.
Eastland, between Willow and Scott has some nice displays. And I am so on my way to Monroe tonight!
End of Woodlawn near Nelson Ferry. Oy oy oy.
+1
When it is plugged in, it’s like daytime! Love it.
Adair Street. Toned down some this year, too busy to take over my neighbors’ yards again. But the Rudolph Express is back again, along with our new polar bears.
Love all your holiday displays. The reindeer flamingos are adorable.
Don’t tell Rudolph & co. but the pirates crew is my absolute favorite. Maybe one of these years they can make a special Christmas appearance ? I’m sure they’d be very handsome in Santa hats.
