MARTA Route #2 Partially Restored to Decatur

    Decatur Metro | March 28, 2011 | 3:06 pm

Looks like MARTA Bus #2 will soon return to Decatur Station at select times.  From an AJC article primarily focused on the restoration of the Braves Shuttle…

In addition to the shuttle, the MARTA board voted to add service to bus routes 2, 87, 99 and 181.

The original item under consideration regarding Route #2 was “…selected trips between North Avenue Station to Decatur Station via Ponce de Leon Avenue on all service days”.

Thanks to Steve and Craig for point this out!

The cuts last fall mainly adversely impacted lower income and working people. Middle class people like me, who us MARTA but are not dependent on MARTA, hardly felt the cuts. The restoration of the #2 appears to be a win for the disenfranchised.

        +1

And for folks who would rather be reading and enjoying themselves on public transportation rather than texting and driving.

route 2 from decatur was not utilized by many people. it ran almost empty way too often, adding traffic, noise and fumes to ponce. much of the route is redundant. I believe a similar route runs now from east lake station to north avenue. there was almost no support for adding it back from decatur, why are they bringing it back?

I totally disagree. I rode the old route every day for years until it was discontinued. It was sometimes not full, but always well utilized by an amazing variety of people. There were people crying on the last day because they did not have another way to get to their job at Druid Hills Country Club and Fernbank Museum. I also know a mother who took her 6 and 9 year old children to Fernbank Elementary School all the way from South DeKalb (2 hours to and from school) and now has to walk an additional mile to get to a better school. Those are just some of the real life examples I personally know about.

What’s wrong with texting and driving? I’m really good at both, and doing them simultaneously saves time. And I’m a better driver when I’ve had a few beers, although that makes focusing on my iPhone a little tough, especially when I have to shift gears.

I thought all gas-guzzlers had automatic transmisions. That’s what token Republicans drive, right? By the way, what you are describing is not impressive unless you also are bouncing a baby on your knee, hot coffee on the other, and smoking at the same time. As a male, you are excused from the putting on make-up in the mirror requirement.

My babies are too old to bounce on my lap, but they LOVE sticking their heads out the sunroof of my econobox Mazda at 40 mph.

I am glad it is back. I lived in NYC for many years and loved taking the subway. Besides that, I don’t like to drive, and am really not the best driver in the world either. So for a year (before the cuts) I used the #2 bus route every morning to get to Buckhead via North Avenue train station.

Without #2 Route service, it was a mile walk to the Decatur Station, and then the train took me downtown before changing to get to Buckhead. But WITH #2 Route service, my commute was about 20-30 mins faster most of the time….take the bus to N Ave train station, then train to Lindberg or Buckhead station.

Still, had to give it up & start driving again. What is generally a 30 minute drive from Decatur to Buckhead took an 1 1/2 + hours on Marta. I really tried, but needed those 2 hours a day back, and also could not tolerate being late for work.

Sad really, as riding the train/taking the bus was enjoyable most of the time.

I love the smell of bus fumes in the morning,……smells like disenfranchised.
