Decatur’s “Alma Hour” Moved Indoors, Earth Hour Bonfire Cancelled

    Decatur Metro | March 26, 2011

Katie Abel passes along the word on the Decatur Minute…

Please note: Alma Hour [the city's Alma Fleetwood Memorial] has been moved to City Hall and will be held at 7:00pm.

Due to rain and tornado warnings in the area, we have had to cancel Earth Hour and the Bonfire. As of now, we do not have a make-up date planned. Thank you and have a good evening

Wasn’t an Earth Hour bonfire kind of contrary to the whole idea to start with?

Not if you use carbon free, organic, sustainably harvested, free-range, fire-logs purchased from a co-op in Borneo and shipped across the Pacific using kite powered freighters then sold in green packaging.

I wish those free-range fire-logs would stop pooping in my pine straw.

Try using green plastic flamingoes to scare them away
          .

The Earth defends itself against “Earth Hour”!

How dare you suggest that I use logs from Borneo! I happen to be a locaburner! We need to keep our wood-splitting jobs right here in the good ol’ U.S. of A.

      To Ken’s earlier question…

I would love to hear how a bonfire and marshmellow roast came to commemorate Earth Day. That’s gotta be a scene straight out of Parks and Recreation.

I don’t know this, but could it have been the bonfire we were denied because of weather just before Christmas, rescheduled?

I think you miss my point. Earth Hour is an hour where we acknowledge the damage to the earth from global warming caused by human activities. Burning trees in an open bonfire in order to do that is like serving veal at a PETA fundraiser.

Maybe they are trees that were coming down anyway? E.g. were diseased or threatening to fall on something or part of a clearing for construction? While I agree that we need to protect our earth’s green canopy, I’m not sure that the occasional community bonfire has any real impact. But correct me if I’m wrong.

I have to assume Ridge is speaking more to the carbon issue than the felled trees issue, since Earth Hour, if I’m not mistaken, was born out of climate concerns.

Earth Hour is a protest against manmade global warming.
Which is mostly caused by burning things.
So burning something to protest global warming is …..

So what is the green way to toast marshmallows? I’m not against being appropriate on Earth Day. I just want my outdoor toasted marshmallows.

I like the way earth hour was commemorated several years ago when I lived in Atlanta’s Ponce-Highland area. Most local businesses turned off their lights for an hour. A real sense of comunity and shared purpose was created. Why not here?

How about lights out AND marshmallow roast! We love toasted marshmallows!

They were going to turn out the lights on the Square.
