This is one of my favorite Decatur traditions even though I no longer have a child in the age group that idolizes huge vehicles.

Do what I do and borrow one!

I learned after the first year that people look at you real funny when you show up as a single adult to these things. But borrow your friend’s five year old and it’s all good. Except then it’s not free because they want Chick-fil-a and Dairy Queen. But it’s still more than worth it. For two months after last year’s event, whenever I saw the aforementioned 5-year old, he would remind how funny it was that the SWAT truck had a bathroom in it 😉

On a related serious note, maybe this year the DPD officers in charge of showing off the police car will remember to remove the printed sex offender list from the door panel. Or maybe not. I’ve got to say that the highlight for me last year was hearing some seven or eight year old start reading the names and asking his daddy what they did to get their names in the police car. I had to walk away very quickly to keep from responding…

Does it make me a terrible person that this event always sounds vaguely dirty to me?

I wonder if a therapist has the truck use a doll afterward to show where it was touched.

It has struck me that way too but I have always resisted the urge to say anything because I don’t want to jeopardize one of the most favorite activities of Decatur 3 year olds. And being able to put a hand on the metal of the truck is part of the thrill! Luckily 3 year olds think concretely rather than on a Freudian level.

This is our favoritest event of the year, and not just for our younger ones. Nothing like our tough 11-year old girl meeting a “girl cop” who rides a motorcycle! And then getting to sit on said motorcycle!

We love this event almost more than our kids do.

I wonder if the Decatur police car that has the Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system will be there? Now that would be cool to see.

So glad everyone is excited about Touch a Truck- last year I enjoyed the SWAT truck- and no, I didn’t have a child with me. So come out and enjoy- children of all ages are most welcome!

My kiddos love it too. FYI for first timers….it gets loud. So, go easy on the sauce on Friday night and bring ear plugs on Saturday.
