I “know” these sculptures are supposed to be “art,” but frankly I would rather have the benches empty for real people to sit in.

“Creepy” – EXACTLY! Thank you for providing the right word.

Wow– “creepy”?? Really??? I suppose it’s all in the eye of the beholder. I’ve always liked these sculptures– I find them somewhat comforting & sweet. Clowns, now– THEM I find creepy!

          i, too, find them sweet…
and i totally agree with the clown thing….scary stuff!

Agree with clowns being scarey. They terrified me and then terrified one of my kids. I think they grow out of the medieval style of entertaining children–Grimm’s fairy tales etc.

Kids love these bench sculptures. I think they convey a good ethic. And where else would kids learn as toddlers who Thomas Jefferson is?

“convey a good ethic” – what does that mean? just curious…

Oh, I don’t know–two older people who still care about each other and get out of the house and sit outdoors and enjoy the world. Some kids are not exposed to the real elderly much and are scared of them or find them unappealing. They don’t realize that they were young once, in love, active in the world. I find the sculpture more appealing than the shaft on the other side of the Courthouse. Not that I don’t support patriotism, Mr. Billingsley and others, I’m just not a fan of Washington Monument style sculpture.

While it isn’t my favorite style of art I find them somewhat endearing and well-suited for the City. I like how people dress them up on occasion with a scarf or flowers. I wanted to give them books to hold during the Book Festival but never got around to it.. . . .

They could be the city mascots

        I second this.

They look too sad and creepy to me. I would not want Decatur’s mascot to look sad and creepy and be sitting there forever waiting on the #2 bus which will never come again.
