This week’s Free-For-All Friday is sponsored by Intown Ace Hardware…
Joe and Dave began construction in 1984 and opened the doors of Intown True Value Hardware in the summer of 1985. Tony began working that summer at what he refers to as the longest part-time job in history. He became a partner in 1994 shortly before we made the switch to Ace Hardware.
Intown Hardware has been a strong supporter of the community over the years with an emphasis on the local elementary and high schools. This involvement has been rewarding for the store and its employees, many of whom attended these schools.
To celebrate this milestone, on October 2nd there will be food, fun and a 25% discount on almost everything in the store. Please come by so we can thank you personally for choosing Intown as your hardware store. Tony and Dave are looking forward to the next 25 years.

Multi-family yard sale this weekend!
143, 149 & 153 Willow Ln., Decatur, GA 30030. The neighborhood is in the Clairmont Rd./Scott Blvd./N. Decatur Rd. triangle.
Mens & women’s clothes, baby toys, strollers and clothes, furniture, electronics, household items.
I’m so glad we have these guys nearby, they’re a great example of how much better local is to big box. Thanks Intown!
simply put—intown ace rocks!
I love that place. They are always so helpful especially when I have no idea what I am doing with a project.
Thanks intown for hosting the DHS band yard sale every year!
Thanks Intown, for hosting Girl Scout cookie sales every year, for always knowing what we need and showing us how to use it, for being friendly and helpful no matter how crowded it is, for giving back.
Anyone interested in taking over the “admin” duties of the “Bring Trader Joe’s to Decatur” Facebook group? I’m thinking of deleting my Facebook account but if I go ahead and delete my account, the group will get deleted as well. Any takers?
Hi All. Prompted by all the suggestions on a previous FFAF, the husband and I finally made it to Garlic Thai last week. The food was WONDERFUL! We even went for a second time later in the week. The service has a few kinks, but it looks like they are trying to work those out. I highly recommend trying it. And their patio is wonderful in this weather.
So glad you like it, too– it’s become one of our favorite places. Their volcano roll sushi is divine!
TGIF. i get married on the 9th and turn 30 on the 12th. I had no idea how much planning went in to this wedding stuff. my god. i can see why people hire wedding planners.
Joe, they should make illegal any movie that makes wedding planning look like a fun, happy, silliness filled family adventure. It’s such a lie! Just survive my friend…just survive.
Congrats (and happy birthday), Joe. I got married this summer. I DID NOT enjoy the wedding planning process, but am enjoying marriage so far.
Enjoy the many happy years ahead.
Can’t wait for the wedding/honeymoon, but my god the movies all lied! lol
Awww, congratulations! I was my own “wedding planner”– and it couldn’t have gone more smoothly. That was because the decisions were made by my spousal unit & me, and no one else. We paid for our own wedding, and everyone showed up & enjoyed the food, booze, and music/dancing– as a matter of fact, lots of our guests told us it was one of the most fun weddings they’d ever attended. My caterer told me I was THE most laid-back, cheerful bride she’d ever met! If I could give you only one bit of advice, it would be this: please make it a point to enjoy yourself at your wedding! You’ve planned for months & likely paid out the wazoo, and so many bridal couples end up not having any fun at the party they’ve put so much effort into. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfectly wonderful!
Could not agree more. Enjoy yourself and this time with your soon to be spousal unit. Wishing you the best!
Congrats and enjoy!
I know some of you are very familiar with city codes and rules and wondered if you could help me out.
Over the past month, the number of people knocking on our door has increased significantly with the upcoming election. All the people knocking on our door have the proper credentials, but they’re coming so late! Two times it’s been after 8:00 and two weeks ago, it was after 9:00. It’s not a big deal if you don’t have kids, I guess. But when you have small kids and babies, that’s right at bed time and the loud knocking is hard to ignore. Are there rules about the hours they can solicit?
We tape a kindly worded note to our door during nap time and bedtime that asks people not to knock or ring the bell.
Single women don’t like late evening visitors either. Really, it shouldn’t happen.
According to City Code Section 22-2 (c), they can’t come after 8PM. If they do, call DPD.
Thanks, Steve! Just what I needed to know.
Intown Ace: Thank you so much for being a part of our family! Congratulations on your 25 years–looking forward to the cookout tomorrow!!!
RE Ace: It’s a hardware store, variety store, Dollar Generaish storel (tee hee), gardening store, kitchen and knicknack store, work clothing store, and much more all rolled up in one, with an ambience that fits its location on Scott Blvd, semi-commercial, semi-residential. Helpful staff, donaters to the community, can’t say enough good about the store.
Don’t forget the free popcorn!
I want to invite everyone to the International Walk to School Day Pep Rally on the Square next Tuesday from 5:30 until 7pm. Details at http://www.beactivedecatur.com. Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band will be playing and the kids will love it! Watch out for hundreds of children walking and biking to school on Wednesday morning- we want them all to arrive safe.
It wouldn’t be FFAF without a question about the Coming Soon Diner. Is it open yet? We’re thinking of checking it out before the DHS football game tonight.
Nope.
I hope that the construction delays are no indication to how long it will take to cook my order. LOL.
Love that Intown Hardware! Everything I could possibly need or want, cept food. Plus happy, helpful people! Can’t ask for more.
Anyone know anything more about the murder in Avondale Estates this morning? I saw some emergency vehicles go by about 7:15am, but have no idea if that was related to this incident or not.

Who remembers DM’s post on “Confessions of Vengeance,” the short mobster film being directed and produced by Decatur High School students and recent graduates? Well, here’s a quick update on the project:
Filming wrapped up about a month ago, and a gallery of behind-the-scenes pictures are now online for your viewing pleasure! Check them out at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=15945&id=113982788650166&l=728f6a7e96
The expected premiere date for the 25-minute short will be later this fall.
Enjoy the pictures, and have a great weekend!
Wednesday, Decatur High School hosted a senior investiture ceremony, with a reception. Invitations were sent, seniors told to wear nice clothing, there was music, a guest speaker, superintendent and principal were there, etc,. etc. The stated purpose of said ceremony was to impress upon seniors their responsibility to be role models and leaders for the school.
I was appalled at the behavior of the students, who whooped and whistled and hurled catcalls at students. It was behavior more appropriate to a strip club than a ceremony. I don’t understand why no one on stage intervened to remind students of the expected behavior either during the ceremony or (as far as I can tell) afterwards.
I’m not against students enjoying themselves, but shouldn’t we be teaching students the appropriate behavior during such an event?
Furthermore, I don’t understand why some young women were allowed to participate in clothing that would not meet the dress code — i.e. extremely low cut or very short. My own daugther decided against wearing several of her dresses becauase they weren’t appropriate, and went out and bought something else to wear. But then, we saw the low-cut, short clothing and wondered.
Am I just an old fuddy duddy?
what is a “senior investiture ceremony”?
I went and it wasn’t clear to me. Maybe an attempt to get seniors to take the year more seriously?
One theory I heard to explain the inappropriate behavior was that this may be as close to a graduation ceremony as some students get.
And the miniskirts weren’t my main issue, although I do wonder the use of a dress code that isn’t enforced. Why didn’t anyone instruct these students on proper behavior?
You’re not an old fuddy duddy for having this view. Not at all. More and more I notice this type of inappropriate behavior at large “formaly” gatherings; such as people who are introduced to speak being whistled at or cheered on as if they are at a sporting event. What’s worse: the cheering during the speech…
As a parent I agree. But the original miniskirts were pretty darn microscopic by the end of that fashion fad. Look at old movies, the women couldn’t even pick anything up off the floor. Girls between the age of 13 and 25 seem prone to dressing in ways that do not seem wise, either in terms of garnering respect in the work world or in terms of their personal safety. What’s ironic is that young women are naturally healthy and attractive without having to wear provocative clothing or make up.
Good news is that the continuing recession is likely to result in more ample clothing. Historically, recessions result in longer hemlines and more cloth used in garments because the cost of materials and labor goes down. But maybe outsourcing changes the economics of fashion. Most of our clothing manufacturing is probably overseas.
My husband and I thought it was very disappointing to see the dress code wasn’t enforced and that the children behaved as children not as the adults that they are becoming.
I would blame their behavior and their clothing styles on their parents. We as parents set the example for our children and apparently that is what their parents have taught them as being except able .
Exactly.
anyone want to trade a diner booth for a antique china cabinet ?
Thank you Intown Ace Hardware for all of the support you have given to our community and to our schools these past 25 years. Your staff is always so friendly and knowledgeable.
See you tomorrow! I hope Tony is making his tasty BBQ!
How does one go about finding a couple of brawny guys (or gals!) to help me get a chest from my car to my condo door (two flights of stairs)? Should I post a flyer on campus at Emory? Or Java Monkey? What would be a fair amount to pay for this?
Look on Craigslist for movers.
I am looking to have hardwood floors refinished/sealed. Really really limited budget; a light sanding and seal may be fine for my needs. Franchise in N Atlanta quoted me ~$1100 for 800sqft but would really like to use someone local if I could. I wish I could say I was looking for craftsmanship and attn to detail but for this particular job the focus is on the bottom line.
If you get a chance, post how doing this came out and how much it cost. I did my original floors myself but the nosebleeds from the poly and the crazy effort have left me leery of doing it again.
I did it myself, covering about 200 sq ft, a few months ago. It was hard at first (and I had some guidance), but ultra-cheap by comparison. If you are careful with the poly and avoid leaving behind drips and gaps, it looks great.
Re the sanding — it doesn’t take very much. I got most scratches and dings out using an all-purpose handle screwed onto a sanding pad. I did not even rent a sander.
We wanted to do it ourselves (although I admit there is an intimidation factor), but we are pretty much running out of time. I would skip doing them all together but I want to seal them from futuredamage and we really need to get the wax, dirt, etc off first.
Nelliebelle, I will let you know.
Who are your favorite movers? I’ve got around 10 pieces that need moving by insured professionals, but I’m not made of money.
Mark the Mover is AWESOME. Very very professional. They send out a 3-man crew. I have found that their hourly rate is well worth it because they are FAST. They moved my entire house (load, unload, transportation time) in 2.5 hours. They wrap everything up to prevent damage. Good, good work.
Yes yes yes to Mark The Mover! Have used them 3 times in the past 11 years and they are fast and very honest. Just make sure you are the first job of the day so your move doesn’t get delayed if their other jobs are not ready/unprepared.
Take a look at BungoBox for movers, very cool concept and makes moving easier.
Thanks for the suggestion, Christopher. Sadly, all I need is some burly men (or women) to lift some really heavy pieces. I’ve got more boxes than I could ever use.
If you feel comfortable picking up day laborers, you can find them in front of the Home Depot on the Lawrenceville Hwy.
Anyone know of a local group that can take bikes in need of a tune-up as a donation from a well-meaning but mechanically skill-less fellow?
Try Sopo Bike Coop in East Atlanta: http://www.sopobikes.org/
Yes, I also endorse SOPO as a worthy place for fixable bicycles.
i think this is the least commented FFAF i’ve seen. I wonder if it’s because of the no dogs allowed thread or the weather
There’s a piece on the Comcast home page about “Dollar Store Dangers”!
