Get An Inside Look at Decatur Fire & Police
Decatur Metro | July 16, 2009With all the recent, heightened concern about crime within the city limits, this 8 week program offered by our police and fire departments seems more apt than ever.
Decatur PD’s Communication’s Director, Juanchella Francis sends along this note giving the details.
The Citizens Public Safety Academy (CPSA) is an exciting way to learn about police work and how the community can respond to emergencies. Through a well-prepared curriculum, taught once a week for 8 weeks, students will learn about all aspects of police operations. Academy participants will meet many of the men and women who serve in the Decatur Police and Fire Departments as they explain the functions of patrol officers, investigators, administrators, and firefighters. Academy participants will also learn how officers are trained and how one can protect against crime and fire hazards. Interesting demonstrations will illustrate the many skills and abilities police officers and fire fighters must have to effectively protect Decatur.
An important and exciting phase of the Academy is the opportunity to leave the classroom and view police work first hand by riding with patrol officers. [editor's note: There is also a tour of the DeKalb jail.]
Applicants must submit to a limited background investigation by the Decatur Police Department that will include a check of criminal history and driving record. Individuals who do not meet the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council standards will not be accepted into the CPSA program.
Students must be a minimum of 21 years of age by the first day of class. Class space is limited, but a waiting list will be held for future classes should the demand exceed available space.
The Citizens Public Safety Academy is an excellent class to take if you want to become informed about police procedures, crime prevention and fire safety. It also gives Decatur residents and those affiliated with Decatur an opportunity to develop working relationships with our Public Safety staff. If you are interested in completing an application for the September class please contact Juanchella Grooms Francis at (678) 553-6656 or email her at juanchella.francis@decaturga.com.
This evening after walking back from the cigar shop I saw a chef from either sushi avenue or Siam Thai chasing a criminal down the square upset and yelling something I was unable to understand. Apparently the suspect had stolen something from the restaurant or it’s grounds. Meanwhile a woman played Congo drums in the gazebo while smoking a northern lighted tobacco of some sort, while an aroused eccentric hobo urinated on the steam statue while another was trying to light a bottle of tobasco in that memorial with the eternal flame. Unfortunately I was not armed this evening, so did not investigate further. But it made me wonder why Decatur doesn’t have some sort of permanent police presence on the square? It seems like it would be worthwhile.
How did you know he was aroused?
‘Cause dude is a sleek and sexy urban warrior whose ninja sight lets him sense the arousal and intent of “hoboes”.
Nelliebelle is correct. Though I should clarify that some of that was Bernie talking (stopped at brickstore on way home from said cigar shop before identifying or misidentifying suspects)
I completed the CERT program through DeKalb County, then briefly volunteered to assist the Fire Department. Due to work scheduling I wasn’t able to participate as much as I wanted, but did make a point of catching a few classes organized by the FD. Coordination between Police and Fire at that time was a little jaded toward the Police side. I guess people are drawn to thrill of the chase and carrying guns, riding in patrol cars, and catching the bad guys.
Working with the FD was a real eye opener though. They are first responders for just about everything, and they keep a vigilant eye on all the events taking place around Decatur. What impressed me most is the amount of preparation and work they do “behind the scenes”. They could always use a little extra help and they always enjoy the company when you stop by for visit.
If my work schedule ever relaxes, I’d be interested in participating in CPSA.
Looks like he took a stupid quiz on Facebook to me. Try it. You’ll be a racist too.
J. Doe,
That’s a very strong accusation. What you are seeing is the result of a couple of quizzes he has taken. So he didn’t write that on his wall; it was the results of those quizzes. I can understand why this would upset someone, but without knowing the officer personally, it’s safer to err on the side of caution. Are you sure you’re not inviting a libel suit?
Officer,
If you’re seeing this, you might consider changing your Facebook settings so that only friends can see your information. When you join a network (in this case, Atlanta, GA), it automatically allows others in that network to see your information.
Everyone,
I recommend extreme caution on making blanket statements like this about anyone you don’t personally know. Facebook is not a good place to get to know someone.
I could not agree more Eric.
I’ve taken down the post in question because I have a real issue with people who blanket my site with the same damn “look at this” link on multiple posts.
If you were so concerned, you’d forward it to the Chief, not post it on a blog…multiple times. To me it just looks like a smear campaign.
Thanks, DM. Of course, now my post below looks out of sync, since what it is referring to is gone.
But it’s better than keeping such an inflammatory post on the site.
sorry. was just very disturbed when I read it. youre right, maybe a totally random answer to a quiz. just not something that sat well with me with the hitler image.
