2009 Decatur Arts Festival This Weekend
Decatur Metro | May 21, 2009If its Memorial Day weekend, it’s time for the Decatur Arts Festival!
You know the drill. Saturday and Sunday, up on Decatur Square. If you’re new to the drill, you can get all the details and maps here.
Also, don’t forget about the ArtWalk on Friday night from 5p-10p. For the ful list of ArtWalk participants, click here.
UPDATE: From Beth – “the Clairemont Elementary School Rain Barrel Auction will be this Saturday, May 23 at 6:00 pm on the bandstand during Decatur’s Arts Festival.”
Love this festival. Lots of folks work very hard to make this work every single year.
Would be nice if some more varied vendors/ art came in rather than mostly the same folks with jewelry, funky yard art. Seems repetitive.
Inman Park fest has such a great varied offering. They are larger of course, but some different stuff would make it more exciting to return to DAF year after year.
This is a suggestion, not a criticism, BTW!
Here’s to good weather.
SAAC, there are always way more vendors who want to be at DAF than there are room for, so they are selected based upon quality and variety. It’s true that some return each year, but there is turnover also.
Understood.
I just see more variety at Inman park, but that may be due to space issues as they have lots of room.
The music lineup this year is great.
I think it would be interesting to hear how people “use” the Arts Festival. There’s so much going on all at once, I’d like to know what routes/schedules people have to make sure they get to see all they want to.
Some local businesses will be hosting events and special exhibits in addition to the booths on the square, too– and in addition to the Art Walk which many of us do. Mingei will be hosting refugee artisans both days– an Iraqi calligrapher on Saturday and a local company that employs Bhutanese refugees to make eco-pouches called “keepers” on Sunday. Put your local businesses on your routes, too!
120 Sycamore Place Gallery & Studios, located behind Fellini’s,across from Carpe Diem, will be hosting an ArtStroll sharing the work of the 13 Sycamore Artists and featuring recent prints and wood sculptures of Lucy Stovall, whose work is part of the Smithsonian collection.Candice Dyer,of Atlanta Magazine fame, will introduce Joey Stuckey ,who is featured in her book as the blind musician with a vision ,The Music Of Macon.Enjoy Mr. Stuckey’s original blend of jazzy blues and peruse the art. It’s all FREE and from 7-10pm.404 377 7747
I get a completely different impression between Inman Park and the Decatur Arts Festival than SAACJack.
While much larger, to me, Inman Park has far more junk than Decatur Arts. The vendors for Decatur Arts have to actually be selling art, and be artists, and it is very competitive to get into, whereas Inman Park lets anyone who pays the fee in from true artists, to people selling soap, rocking chairs, and hiking sticks.
They are both good shows, but as far as serious art, I think the DAF is the better show by a long shot.
Oakhurst Elem. PTA will be selling hot dogs, chips, bottled water, sodas & juice boxes on Saturday from 10-2 behind the Rec, where the children’s activities will be.
Great artists (always something new), great music, literary arts, something for everyone. I’ll be there!
Sorry lisa that we disagree. I have several paintings by artists who have pieces in corporate collections/folk art museum in Baltimore etc.
Inman Park may have more “junk” (subjective of course!) due to percentages. I LIKE SOAP! May just be ’cause I am a guy, but DAF seems loaded with a kabillion earring booths and whirlygig like stuff. Not there is anything wrong with that if you like it.
Again, I didn’t mean to knock DAF at all. Here’s to the rain being kind to us.
Oops! That should be “From Inman park” re: art pieces from several artists” above. Really should not type before coffee.
Photos from the Decatur Arts Festival on Saturday. Would love if you linked to them if you post about tomorrow’s festival.
