AJC Posts Buyout List; Moves Tucker to D.C.
Decatur Metro | April 13, 2009A list of 74 AJC employees who accepted the paper’s buyout offer was published this morning.
Not being an insider of any kind, many of these names are unfamiliar to me. Luckily, Creative Loafing’s Scott Henry went through the list and gave us a rundown of what’s being lost. In addition to nearly all the arts critics, DeKalb bureau chief Larry Conley and DeKalb reporter David Simpson are among those who accepted the buyout.
Henry also reports in his post of layoffs last week that have upset remaining staffers.
And in other “News About the News” news, the paper is moving Cynthia Tucker to D.C. to cover national politics. Which makes me wonder, what happened to the focus on local?
I would guess that the AJC is opening the door for Tucker to leave. She will have an opportunity to show her skills at the national level.
Having someone in D.C. doesn’t necessarily mean the AJC will be less focused on local reporting. In fact, any newspaper could do good, local journalism from D.C. (Though it wouldn’t be practical.) Just focus on local legislators and legislation particularly relevant to local readers.
I’M THRILLED TO SEE THIS WOMAN LEAVE GEORGIA, SHE DOES NOTHING BUT BASH THE STATE. SHE WILL REALLY FIT IN WASHINGTON, HER KIND OF FOLKS – RADICAL, ANTI-EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD AND TAKING US DOWN A ROAD FROM WHICH WE WILL NEVER RECOVER. PERSONALLY, I AM GLAD TO SEE HER GO. NOW………BIG QUESTION, WONDER WHO WILL REPLACE HER? HOPE THEY ARE BETTER AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE WORLD AND STATE THAN SHE IS.
And besides, Pat, YOU DON’T HAVE TO SHOUT.
No need for labeling folks.
Personally I’d like to hear more detail about all the good things she is against. Then maybe there could be a conversation.
Agree that you could “do” local news from D.C. Unsure as to how “good” it would be. We could settle for “local” news shipped in from D.C., but why? Should the news media really be taking cues from agribusiness?
BTW, this morning’s AJC says that Tucker will be writing about Atlanta in relation to national issues…which could actually be kind of a cool angle – but it seems like its easier to monitor D.C. from Atlanta than the other way around.
You don’t have to agree with her, but to assert that she wasn’t “aware of what is going on in the world and the state” is abosolutley false. She seems very well informed. But just because the information that she processes doesn’t lead her to opinions that would classify her as a right-wing nut job, as it seems you might wish, well, she shouldn’t appologize for that.
And, frankly, bashing the ridiculousness of our state legislature (which I suppose is what you are refering to), which is full of self-serving, backwards yahoos seemed quite appropriate to me.
Pat, my right wing extremist alarm bells are setting off in the background.
Maybe they should replace her with Ann Coulter or someone else like her that is so reasonable and well informed. Ha!

Ifixed the sentence for you:
