Pet Friendly Decatur Businesses
Decatur Metro | January 12, 2009 | 9:24 amInspired by this recent pic over on The Decatur Minute and my frequent dog walks, I’m wondering if there are any pet-friendly Decatur businesses that I’m unaware of.
I’ve got three off the top of my head thus far: Worthmore (above), U-Joint and Taj Ma-Hound. Where else?
I’ve seen bowls outside of Fleet Feet and Twist ‘n Scoot, and I believe Dancing Goats has a dog parking line (and bowl of water) outside the entrance.
The guy at Decatur CD has always allowed me to bring my dog inside with me – leashed of course. I’m not sure if that is a general policy, or if he allows it on a case-by-case basis depending on how well behaved your dog is.
Also, I beleive Whit’s End would welcome a dog as they have one there. Might be a good idea for me to do a blog on- thanks for the idea.
Though I haven’t tried this at the one on Decatur, most Starbucks locations will allow dogs if they’re small/can be held.
What business in Decatur is not pet friendly? BTW, during my travels to France I was initially surprised to find people bringing their well behaved pets (dog on leash) into even the best of neighborhood (non-tourist) restaurants. In my opinion that was wonderfully “family friendly”. I have had my dog on his leash on the patio at Java Monkey. But I had the strong impression that some other customers felt like I was being an outlaw!
Thanks for the thoughts guys and gals.
Palila, my dog loves the dog amenities along WePo aka West Ponce (I still can’t even type WePo without chuckling). Every time I hook him up at the Dog Dock at Dancing Goats and he goes and sit right in front of the door so no patron is safe entering or exiting without getting slobbered.
I think you guys are right that at many places its on a case by case basis. Unfortunately a hyper golden retriever like mine is a bit SOL…and for good reason!
Mary, I don’t think that’s the case for our Starbucks. I’ve been in there on two occasions when someone came in with a tiny accessory dog tucked in their coat. Both times they were asked to go back outside.
To their credit, though, the counter crew did walk the person’s order out to them…
This isn’t based on personal experience (as I don’t have a dog), but the posting about Eyeworks detailed elsewhere on this site states:
“”For those passing by with their four-legged friends, the Optometrist’s wife bakes dog biscuits and are happy to share them with anyone that stops in”
Maybe it was just something they did when they first opened? I’ll leave it to a four legged friend owner to confirm.
We love the furry friends at Heliotrope. We’ve even been tempted to get a monkey when one customer brought in a little one in a baby blanket.
Stephen at Taste fills me in…
At Taste we always allow dogs inside. Many of our customers bring their dogs to our store for gourmet dog treats or to try on collars. Especially on hot days people like to bring in their dogs so they can lay down on the cool concrete floor. My husky loves it. We’ve been pet friendly since 2002.
We also let dogs visit at Mingei. They love sniffing out smells from around the world!
We’ve brought our 25ish lb dog into nearly every store (that doesn’t regularly serve food) in Decatur without a problem. We never bring him into restaurants (though he has taken advantage of lounging all over many of the fine patios adjacent to such establishments) and I think it would be some sort of health code violation anyway. We’ve only ever been asked to take him out of one retail store, and for what it’s worth, we never set foot in there again.
The optometrist’s wife at Eyeworks of Decatur bakes dog biscuits to give to customers, so I would presume the animals themselves are welcomed inside.
We are pet friendly at Whit’s End. My Greyhound Candi spends most days here with me, and loves visitors of the human and canine kind, as do I. There is a water bowl outside.
