Any Decatur Restaurants Open Christmas Night?
Decatur Metro | November 17, 2008 | 4:53 pmBrent, a DM fan currently living in D.C., writes in with this question about Decatur eateries…
We’re flying in [to Decatur] Christmas Day to visit my mom (who lives in downtown Dec) for a few days. Are any restaurants in/near Decatur open Christmas NIGHT? We won’t be there until maybe 4:00, so the usual mid-day options (some major restaurants and hotel buffets) will have shut down by then. Must we just make a quick dinner at home (Mom’s in her 80s and doesn’t cook much anymore) or will the Majestic on Ponce be our only option outside the apartment?
Isn’t Denny’s always open on Christmas? (Just kidding Brent!)
Waffle House!
Seriously, I would find a local place that is doing Christmas meals and ask one to deliver it to your mom’s place Christmas eve (or whenever it is right after they close for Chritstmas). Lynn at Sawicki’s is doing Thanksgiving that you can order. I don’t know if she’s doing a Christmas thing also, but if she is I’m sure she would work with you to deliver a meal that all you have to do is heat up. 5th Earl is doing Thanksgiving and if they’re doing Christmas they will probably work with you as well.
Later in the evening you probably won’t get a real Christmas meal. You might find an open pub, but I don’t know of any restaurants open other than something like the Waffle House.
Depends on what you call a real Christmas meal! We always do an elaborate dinner at home on Christmas eve, and for years we’ve gone to Pyng Ho on Clairmont for dinner on Christmas night!
Like I have said before, I work for Lynne at Sawicki’s and she will have heat and serve offerings for the Christmas holidays. The menu will be similar to the Thanksgiving dinner menu but also a lot of beef (prime rib, tenderloin) pork and lamb cuts. She can also order in game birds. The menu will be posted shortly after Thanksgiving.
Perhaps T’Mac open that night? I know they on Thanksgiving night.
Try some of the Indian restaurants. Yum!
Well, I don’t know where my verbs were in the earlier post, but it’s perhaps appropriate they were missing. T’Mac is closed completely Christmas Day, although they do open at 4 on T-Day.
My wife and I have a Christmas evening tradition of going to the Brickstore Pub. Don’t know if you’re looking for Christmas Dinner or just a meal out.
To echo SPS, I’ve done a couple of these by myself and a good standby for open restaurants is Chinatown (I’m Asian). Know that’s not near Decatur, but it’s an option. You might want to try one of the local Asian restaurants if you don’t want to head to Chinatown. Not a traditional Christmas dinner, but may be an option. Good luck.
Y’all! The Brick Store Pub on Christmas night is a tradition in our house. It’s THE best place to be that night, Decaturites have it all to themselves, and what better night to pay up for one of those outrageously expensive and alcoholic Belgian beers they have so many of?
This is Brent. Yes, that Brent. Thanks for all the suggestions. Actually, I had thought of Chinese (inspired, frankly, by THAT movie). Might go that route. Or Brickstore. Or whatever else good comes up on this thread. At least I know there is something out there besides Denny’s.
Gees Brent, I think you might have lost your appetite over the trend this blog took on… personally I’m heading to Hawaii for Christmas where the fa ra’s and the fa la’s blend into a helluva good (and warm) day…
Thanks for taking the low road folks. Many comments have been deleted. Personal attacks are not tolerated here.
well shoot, with all of the jabbing at each other deleted, my comment looks like that of a senseless boob… (always a day late and a dollar short… especially a dollar short these days)
Yep…be very careful or you will be deleted as a “low roader”…not sure who was personally attacked. Now that the political tit for tat postings are over…my apologies for an insensitive, intolerant, bombastic, xenophobic quote from a movie directly related to the thread. Maybe THAT MOVIE will be banned this year or riots might ensue. Hopefully we are still allowed to be sarcastic on the blog!
Marlys, the string wasn’t deleted until your LAST comment, which was most certainly a personal attack on another commenter.
Wow…sorry…guess my “meter” needs to be adjusted….I will have that looked into, DM. It is your blog, after all!
Mea culpa.
Frankly, folks, I was amused by the earlier exchange — if only because it was so much like the exchanges that go on among the blogs and chat groups here in my own little under-revitalization inner suburb with its many different kinds of people with sometimes clashing opinions and attitudes.
I’ll feel right (back) at home in Decatur! (Grew up there, by the way; went to Towers High School. And if you’d told me back in 1963 that someday there’d be a BAR on the Courthouse Square open on CHRISTMAS NIGHT I’d have said — no way! )
I’m proud to see Decatur turning out as it is. It’s always fun to come back and walk around.
DM – Since my comments were deleted too, I apologize if you feel I crossed a line. I also apologize for contributing to an off-topic direction in this thread, especially since I have previously complained about others doing the same!
P.S. to Brent – I recommend China Inn on Peachtree Industrial, even though it’s a bit of a drive. We had Thanksgiving there one year when we didn’t feel up to the cooking and family onslaught. Since it was a slow night, our waiter ended up spending a lot of time with us making excellent recommendations and telling us his life story.
It ain’t in Decatur, but we’ve had a couple of nice Christmas Day meals at McCormick & Schmick by Perimeter Mall.
Guys, I apologize for deleting the whole thread. I recognize now that I probably should have just deleted the offending statement and gone from there. There was nothing wrong with the conversation…I just felt that it was close to getting out of hand and I had limited time to deal with it…plus I’m a little sleep deprived.
We’re cool. And no worries about going off topic, as I’ve said before…its not discouraged.
