What Decatur Area Restaurants Are Open on Christmas Night?
Decatur Metro | December 11, 2014 | 12:59 pmOur old friend from years past, Brent, writes in…
Your blog has always been useful in past years as I try to find a place to take my mother (now 87) while visiting Decatur at Christmas.
This year, we wonโt fly in until late afternoon so Iโm especially interested in any places that might be open that night โ whether for a traditional Christmas meal or just bar food, if it comes to that. The main thing is getting out to celebrate for just a bit before the day is done.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Brick Store is opening at 4pm
I was always jealous of my Jewish friends growing up in New Jersey because they got to have Chinese food on Christmas. Too bad that Guy Wong’s Big Boss won’t be open by Christmas but Golden Budda would do and I’m pretty sure they are open on Christmas.
Pyng Ho is generally open on Christmas Eve and Christmas, but the one time I went on Christmas Eve, it was a 1-hour wait for a table.
I’m apparently in the minority of the population who thinks that Golden Buddha kicks Pyng Ho’s butt in food quality ๐
I’m with you.
I’ve never tried golden buddha, tho i guess i’ll have to.
i’m enamored of pyng ho’s hot and sour soup.
They’re both mediocre, IMO. We need a good Chinese eatery around here.
This is purely in terms of takeout, but we started with Golden Buddha and were always happy with it up until a bad batch of ma po tofu led to a nasty bout of food poisoning. We then switched to Pyng Ho for a while and at first thought it was great but eventually decided it was way overpriced for both the quantity and quality. Now we’re back to Golden Buddha — even the ma po. Try the Empress Chicken!
That said, if I’m looking for truly good Chinese food (at least until Big Boss debuts), have to get outside of Decatur. For instance, Tasty China in Marietta has been our Szechuan nirvana for years. Thankfully, my parents live in Smyrna, so we’re there often.
OMG, if you love Szechuan, you gotta go to Gu’s!!!
+1
Been meaning to try Gu’s Bistro for a long time. Will move it up the list.
To get back to the topic at hand, Ted’s Montana Grill opens for Christmas.
Bhojanic had a note on their door saying they are open Christmas day!
We’ve switched to Indian food and a movie. Patel Plaza is rocking on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
Absolutely agree on Indian food for Christmas. MIrch Masala is good. Also agree that Decatur needs a good Chinese restaurant. Both Golden Buddha and Pyng Ho are poor compared to most neighborhood places in other cites and Buford Highway here.
we usually do Golden Buddha on Christmas day – a new tradition when someone forgot to pickup the community q ham that we had pre-ordered.
Still a sore subject, sounds like. ๐
[multiple people]: “No good Chinese food in Decatur.”
Tried Makan? They have the best pork belly bao this side of the Rockville Pike, and I’ll stand on Chef Liu’s coffee table and say that in Mandarin.
Based on my own experience and John Kessler’s write up this week, I’m inclined to agree in regards to the pork bun. But sadly, there’s not much else there food-wise I’ve been thrilled with. Good beer/cocktail selection, but that’s a given in Decatur these days. Hope they can get the food figured out because it’s an awesome space and dripping with potential.

This is Brent, poser of the original question (and thankful to DM for passing it along!).
Appreciate the suggestions! As much as my wife and I might prefer to head over to Brickstore, not sure my 87YO mom can negotiate that room if it’s crowded. Chinese at one of the places on Clairemont may be the way to go. I’ll also call Ted’s Montana but have a feeling they won’t be open into the evening (we don’t land at ATL until 5:00). But again, thanks for the tips and please send more if you have them. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
