Election Day: Open Thread
Decatur Metro | November 4, 2008Well, after 21 months, we’ve finally reached the big day.
Feel free to use this thread to report the length of lines at your voting precincts, vent your general anxiety, or just to discuss how much your going to miss political ads, robocalls, and SNL.
I’m off to vote!
I feel lonely ! No robocalls.
See…I’m not so stupid. 45 minute wait at First Christian AND I saw the mayor walkout after voting…by the time I left at 8:30a the line was all indoors, which probably meant a 15 minute wait.
It would have been even quicker if 4 of the 8 people in front of me in line at the computer check-in weren’t at the wrong polling station.
A friend tells me the line at First Baptist was only about 30 minutes.
Over at Fresh Loaf, Andisheh reports shenanigans by Georgia Court of Appeals candidate Michael Meyer at my own polling station early this morning.
I saw no sign of campaigning once I got there at 7:30a.
Only about a 20-minute wait at Lutheran Church of the Messiah this morning at 8 a.m. My kids watched in silence as I cast my vote. It felt so momentous. Now I will be biting my nails all day.
Short lines at the First Christian Church on W Ponce , I arrived at 9ish and total wait was about 40 minutes…when I was leaving the lines were even shorter!
Make sure you check your registration as the lady in front of me was told she was at the wrong place (after waiting in line) – even though her husband voted their earlier – so even if you live in the same house you may not vote at the same place!
Good luck!
Oakhurst Baptist at 8:45am — the wait was abour 30 minutes. I had taken the day off to volunteer at the polls, but everything seemed to be going smoothly, and they didn’t much help at all. Not too bad!
Really quick line at Coralwood (off Oak Grove) at 8 this morning….apparently, we missed the initial wave and showed up at the right time. We were told there were people in line at 5:30. By the time we got there, I think we were through the lines and out the door in 15 minutes. Everything ran really smoothly, and the polling people were great. It took me longer to stand in line to get my free Krispy Kreme.
Happy to be in unincorporated today – I drove to the polling place at 9:25 a.m. (the Methodist church on the corner of North Decatur and Church St), checked in, voted and was in my car heading home in under 10 minutes. A bus of folks from the retirement community showed up just as I was leaving. My friends over in Fulton County has been in line since 7AM and are still waiting to vote!
I didn’t do the early voting because I love all the “old timers” at my polling place, First Baptist, and they were unfailingly cordial and offered donuts and coffee . walked to the polls by 7:45 a.m. in and out in 45 minutes, despite a line. They mentioned they had people waiting at 5:30 a.m. when they came and opened up. P.S. Although I love First Baptist, First Christian is less than a block away and is not my polling place — Go figure. No wonder people get confused !
We went to Renfroe Middle School at 9:50 ish. No wait at all. In and out in less than 5 minutes!
My theory about letting the rush of voters thin out this morning worked. I went over to Renfroe around 9:30 a.m. and there was no line. They reported a line in place when they opened and a steady stream of folks all morning but folks were getting in and out without a hitch. Took me about 10 minutes tops.
Only a couple of people in line at Epworth in Candler park at 10:30 this morning. A friend reports a 2.5 hour wait earlier in midtown.
I arrived at Renfroe at 7 am and departed at 8 am. Not bad. Would have taken half that time if I had chosen the other line – there were two lines for the verification table, and I was in the one for the lady who had apparently never used a computer before.
Also, I apologize to whomever had to wait for me as I cast my ballot – it’s time consuming to write in Clark Howard for every single ballot item where someone is running unopposed. But that’s the price we pay to VOTE THEM ALL OUT!!!!
Oak Grove Elementary (ok, so it’s a mile north of the city limit)
In line by 7am; out of building by 7:45. Well coordinated and smooth-running.
I didn’t even have time to support the the coffee and KrispyKreme table.
Line was probably down to 30 mins when I left. Typical for a Presidential election at this location.
Correction to previous post: I vote at Medlock Park Elementary, not Oak Grove.
You’re welcome! Signed, Early Voter
Thanks altmod! Obviously the early voters paved the way for our smooth cruise through the voting lines today. Let’s just hope we indeed see the record turnout that we are expecting.

I wish I had thought of that!!
Arrived at North Decatur United Methodist church at 5:30 a.m. Was 6th in line! Had my chair, iPod, book and fleece so I was good to go. First lady in line brought coffee for all the early birds. We took pictures of each other to mark the occasion and had a good time. Poll workers came out about 6:45/50 to hand out paperwork; check ID/verfication. So that was done ahead of time. Doors opened at 7 a.m. and I was done voting at 7:05 a.m.! A little line was starting to curl around the building when I left. But they were like clockwork when I was there.
My 10 y.o. and I strolled over to First Christian about 10 after 10 this morning, went right in with no wait and voted. Most of the booths were taken, but people appeared to be moving quickly through. We celebrated with a high-five and coffee & donuts at Dancing Goats. We’ll be going back to the church this afternoon to drop off the bag of canned goods that we forgot to take this morning!
I voted early but curiosity compelled me to ride by my polling station, Winona Elementary. There was no visible line at all by 8:15 or so.
It may make you feel better to write in Clark Howard, but it means absolutely nothing. Those votes won’t be tallied because he is not registered as a write-in candidate for anything to my knowledge and only those who have gone through the process and been approved will have their votes counted. Each polling place has the official list of write-in candidates from the Secretary of State’s office.
12 minutes at First Baptist. No line at all!
Steve,
True, although I have no illusions that Clark Howard will actually win any county judge seats based on my votes. I just wanted to send some messages:
Incumbents everywhere, beware
Challengers are welcome and necessary in any race
Clark Howard for Mayor of Atlanta
11 am: No line at Winnona Park School, and plenty of voting machines available! In and out in no time at all. The only delay was deciding on what to buy at the WP PTA bake sale.
10-minute wait at First Baptist Church of Decatur on Clairemont. And here’s a kicker: It’s the first time I’ve ever voted in my life.
2pm Voted at Holy Trinity Parish on East Ponce. No line. No wait. Candy when you are finished. It took me longer to printout the Sudoku I planned on doing if I had to wait than it did to vote.
Congrats, Thomas!
Indeed! Cheers Wheatley!
