    Decatur: a Retirement Haven?

    Decatur Metro | September 25, 2008 | 1:40 pm

If you thought that Georgia didn’t have a dedicated retirement magazine all to itself, you’d be wrong.  And if you thought they’d never list Cobb County and Decatur in the same top 10 list, you’d also be wrong.

Retire in Georgia magazine recently ranked Decatur among the top 10 places to retire in the state due to its walkability and whatnot.  However a quick look at some census data shows that those over 60 are still a pretty small minority in terms of the zipcode’s total population, outnumbered by infants, not to mention the 30-somethings.  Then again…which areas of the city aren’t dominated by 30-somethings?

    From City-Data.com

    From City-Data.com

What else does this graph say to me?  If you’re a 21 year-old straight guy looking for a mate in this zipcode…you’ve gotta like your odds…even if some of the ladies aren’t interested.

    Decatur Takes On Facebook

    Decatur Metro | September 25, 2008 | 8:41 am

    Wow…I must be slipping.

The city tipped me off to its new, official Facebook page a couple days back, but I had yet to get around to posting about it. Whelp, now it looks like the AJC beat me to the story. Ouch. However, while the AJC provides a link on its website for the inspired downtown Athens Facebook page, they provide no link to the Decatur page.

And though I found the page a couple days back when first alerted, now its no where to be found. I’ve found the Brick Store’s Facebook page, Thinking Man, the humorous You Might Be From Decatur, GA if…, Decatur High Bulldogs, and No More Condos in Decatur, but the city’s official page (named “downtown Decatur” when last I checked) is no where to be found.

    A little help?

UPDATE: David from InDecatur provides the link.

UPDATE II: Hilarious.  The AJC updates its article and links to Decatur’s new Facebook page.

CL Readers Pick Decatur As Best Atlanta "Suburb"

    Decatur Metro | September 24, 2008 | 10:01 am

Creative Loafing’s “Best of Atlanta 2008” is now online, and it looks like Decatur again rated the city’s “best suburb” among its alt-hipster, pinko-liberal, free-newspaper-loving, much-hyphenated readership!  Leave it to those facist CL “critics” to rate Chamblee as their pick for best Atlanta ‘burb.

Also, congrats to Pecanne Log (critics #1) and Blissful Glutton (readers #1) for ranking as the top local Atlanta blogs!

(For Thomas Wheatley’s eyes only:  I THOUGHT WE HAD A DEAL!?!  I provide you with lots of uncomfortably erotic plastic surgery ads for CL and you give DM a little love!  Well I’ll tell ya…that’s the last time I’m entering into a contractual agreement on a napkin with you!  Where’s that # for Sunday Paper?)

(For CL editor Ken Edelstein’s eyes only:  The above note to Thomas was made in jest.  Please don’t repremand him on my account.  There are so many other valid reasons.)

UPDATE: Whit’s End and Wordsmiths also note that they made the list.  Sure…rub it in.

DHS Students Host Social Hour at Eddie's Attic

    Decatur Metro | September 24, 2008 | 9:09 am

DHS teacher Chris Billingsley writes in about Close Up’s latest fundraising efforts…

The DHS Close Up Club will have a social hour at Eddies Attic this Friday, from 4:00 until 6:30.  The club is trying to raise funds to participate in “Inauguration 2008” a week of government classes and seminars in Washington, D.C. during the 09 inauguration.  Eddies Attic will donate a portion of the sales to the club.  In addition, the club will be hosting a silent auction on for several items including golf and hotel packages, original paintings by Coca-Cola artist Pamela Renfroe, and much, much more.  More information is available at: http://www.elifemagazine.net/closeup.htm

You gotta admire the tenacity of these kids for the cause.  This has got to be, at a minimum, the 3rd or 4th fundraiser they’ve hosted that I’ve heard about.

    Where's the Gas Atlanta?

    Decatur Metro | September 24, 2008 | 8:42 am

At Parker’s request, here’s a thread where folks can post where they’ve seen available gas recently.

Obviously the closer the station is to Decatur, the higher the possibility of usefulness to readers.  However lots of folks commute elsewhere and many folks read DM but don’t live here, so any and all sightings are helpful.

A great idea.  I’m sure we could all benefit from a little teamwork during this current situation where its every man/woman for themselves.

    Thanks in advance!

    Commissioner Fred Boykin Suffers Stroke

    Decatur Metro | September 23, 2008 | 4:51 pm

    The AJC reports…

Decatur City Commissioner Fred Boykin suffered a mild stroke Tuesday morning and was hospitalized, but is expected to recover.

Boykin, who owns Bicycle South, was taken for treatment at Emory University Hospital, where he will likely remain for the next several days, said city spokeswoman Linda Harris.

“He is having some slight problems with his vision, but the overall prognosis is good,” said Harris, who along with other city officials visited the commissioner Tuesday afternoon.

Cards can be sent care of Boykin to Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

Boykin served on the city’s planning commission and zoning board of appeals before being elected as city commissioner in 2001. His current term expires in 2009.

All my best to Commissioner Boykin and his family. Here’s hoping for a full and speedy recovery!

    Decatur Attracting More Republicans?

    Decatur Metro | September 23, 2008 | 4:43 pm

Spurred by comments in a previous post noting the McCain/Palin signs in Decatur yards, Atlanta Public Affairs provides us with a trend of the percentage of voters that cast their ballots for Democrats during the last three election cycles.
