    The Fugees Need Bikes!

    Decatur Metro | May 24, 2013

    Fugees-Cyclists-535x356

Decatur City Commissioner and Bicycle South owner Fred Boykin writes in…

The Fugee Family out in Clarkston provides bicycles for 40 plus kids to ride to Agnes Scott for summer camp. Camp starts in mid June and they need BIKES right now! If you have a bicycle you’d like to donate (teenager to adult sizes – 26” wheel and above), please bring it to Bicycle South, corner of N. Decatur & Clairmont (404-636-4444), and we will get it running for them. We are donating parts and labor.

Even if the bicycle is in poor shape, donate it – they mix and match parts!

Fugees Family Riding to Summer Academic Boot Camp at Agnes Scott

    Decatur Metro | June 18, 2012

Decatur City Commissioner and Bicycle South owner Fred Boykin writes in…

The Fugees Family out in Clarkston (http://www.fugeesfamily.org/) is holding their summer academic boot camp at Agnes Scott through July 16th. Every weekday 70 plus kids will be cycling from Clarkston to Decatur and back – usually around 9 am and 2:30 pm. Bicycle South helped get their bikes ready and we “recycled” a number of bikes for them – donated to us from Decatur residents. This is the fourth year of the camp and since the Fugees Family has no storage space they have to gather bikes together each year in time for the start. I’ll put out an alert to the community next spring for any bike donations as we’re going to keep helping them with this program. The Fugees Family is a great organization working to help out the many refugee children who’ve settled in Clarkston. It’s a great story and folks should check out their web site for more information.

Agnes Scott Launches “Bike Agnes Scott” Program

    Decatur Metro | February 18, 2010

Decatur Commissioner and Bicycle South’s Fred Boykin writes in…

Agnes Scott has just started a Bike Agnes Scott program with Bicycle South and Fuji Bicycles. Their program is modeled on the Bike Emory program that Emory, Bicycle South and Fuji started as a pilot project in 2007.

Agnes Scott deserves some credit for setting this program up. The web page just went live today.

    Commissioner Fred Boykin Suffers Stroke

    Decatur Metro | September 23, 2008

    The AJC reports…

Decatur City Commissioner Fred Boykin suffered a mild stroke Tuesday morning and was hospitalized, but is expected to recover.

Boykin, who owns Bicycle South, was taken for treatment at Emory University Hospital, where he will likely remain for the next several days, said city spokeswoman Linda Harris.

“He is having some slight problems with his vision, but the overall prognosis is good,” said Harris, who along with other city officials visited the commissioner Tuesday afternoon.

Cards can be sent care of Boykin to Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

Boykin served on the city’s planning commission and zoning board of appeals before being elected as city commissioner in 2001. His current term expires in 2009.

All my best to Commissioner Boykin and his family. Here’s hoping for a full and speedy recovery!
