Decatur Schools Don't Have Enough Parents for Leadership Teams?
Decatur Metro | August 21, 2008UPDATE: The extension wasn’t due to a lack of candidates. Winnona Park’s principal was good enough to fill us in. See comments below.
So remember that whole charter school system thing we did a few weeks back? Yeah well…apparently they don’t have enough parent volunteers to be on the vitally important “leadership teams”, because they’ve extended the deadline until tomorrow, according to the AJC.
Yeah I know, not much notice…but I didn’t post it…it was the AJC. Also, since each school is supposed to have its own leadership team, which are we talking about here?
These teams aren’t just advisory groups…they are key component of the charter school idea. So the fact that they have to extend the deadline is a bit worrisome. The AJC article says check out the school system’s website for details…but I’m not going to link you over there because unless they mean for you to go ahead and flip thru the massive charter school application for a description of the leadership teams, I don’t see any easily accessible information.
So instead I suggest jumping over to this great leadership team FAQ (pdf) on the Decatur edTV website and watching this video from Decatur edTV if you are interested in joining any of our schools’ parent leadership teams.
This is an excellent example of the dynamic that plays out right here on our trusty Decatur Metro. You can always find plenty of folks to tell you how their random opinion is somehow better than our collective goals, or how everything’s screwed up, or how stupid our leadership is, or how our taxes are a rip off but, strangely, the numbers dwindle when it comes time to actually doing something about it.
That’s okay. The ranting is fun too.
I don’t think the deadline was extended for a lack of people volunteering. My understanding is there might have been some confusion about when the actual deadline was, so it was extended until Friday to alleviate any confusion. I know more people than the required number of volunteers have applied at my son and daughter’s elementary school. I don’t know if that is true at any of the other City of Decatur schools.
Thanks tpreed…that’s good to know!
Stating that definitely would have been a good thing to include in the rather vague AJC announcement. I’m happy to hear that people want to be involved! That sounds a lot more like the Decatur I know.
It is true that some of the Decatur schools moved their application dates back (today at noon) to accept nominees to the School Leadership Teams. However, this was done to align each school’s application deadline to the same day. This was not done because their was a lack of applicants.

Thanks Greg. I’ve updated the post to reflect your comment.
