Breaking: Atlanta Has Worst Traffic in Country
Decatur Metro | May 2, 2008In my ongoing pursuit to bring you all needless city rankers regarding things you already know, here’s a new one out by Forbes.com, which rates Atlanta, GA as the city with the worst commute in the whole darn country.
OK, so we’ve achieved our goal of #1 status. Unless we’re looking to compete with Shanghai to be “Worst in the World”, let’s quickly get through the awards ceremony (and the after-parties) so we can implement some solutions to the traffic problem. No? You need more time to create additional committees and action plans? OK…just as long as you’re not stalling.
You’re not stalling GA legislature, right?

Sorry to learn about the #1 status! I recently witnessed the outbound lanes of Atlanta’s I-85 during Friday afternoon rush hour (yikes!), but fortunately I was in-bound! I can recommend NPR’s article ” ‘Zen Driving’ and Other Gas-Saving Tips” at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90100939
There are some very good ideas in the article, including work from home! Not a new concept however more and more people are actually doing it. (Many companies have eliminated workstations and save on office space.) But of course it depends entirely on whether your job actually requires you to be someplace other than home. Even in relatively rural Vermont, families are choosing to own one car, and some counties have an option to use a local not-for-profit shuttle service that is supported by local businesses and voluntary donations. Who was it that said “Necessity is the mother of invention”? Love your blog, BTW!
I am not sure to what extent most Decaturites know about the free Cliff shuttles (sponsored by Emory and CDC). They are free; no need to show an ID, etc. They also have a bike rack in front. They can be useful not just for commuting to and from Emory, but also to get to and from N. Decatur and Clairmont (Publix etc.) Two shuttles serve Decatur: the CCTMA, which has its terminus at the MARTA bus depot and which has a few stops along Clairmont, and the South Dekalb Park and Ride shuttle, which has stops on S. Candler at Agnes Scott and at Memorial. Overall these are quite reliable, although since the S. Candler stops are under-utilized, if you aren’t careful the drivers might pass you by.
