Tom Stubbs Withdraws From Fall Senate Race

    Decatur Metro | May 13, 2010

Macrolina points out a “classy move by Tom Stubbs”…

Jason Carter, former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, will be the only name on the state Senate District 42 ballot in the July Democratic primary.

Tom Stubbs, who has already qualified to run for the DeKalb County legislator seat, said Wednesday that he is withdrawing from the race.

The DNO also reported this yesterday.

Vote for Your New District 42 Senator Today!

    Decatur Metro | May 11, 2010

    Today’s the day folks.

The day when, we, the residents of GA Senate District 42, proudly go to the polls and pick who has earned the right to have “Incumbent” slapped next to their name when we vote again for this district in November.

    • Over on Fresh Loaf, Thomas Wheatley has compiled some quick bios of the four candidates: Jason Carter, David Montane, Steve Patrick, and Tom Stubbs.
    • If you missed the AJC’s recent profile of the race, it’s still available HERE.
    • And if you’re wondering what an elected Senator with no convened legislature can/will do between now and their impending reelection in November, how they plan to “improve public education”, or if they support mandatory vaccinations (?), the DNO has some answers.

To vote, just head over to your normal voting precinct before 7p this evening.  Don’t know where that is?  CLICK HERE.

AJC Profiles District 42 Senate Race

    Decatur Metro | May 9, 2010

Two days before the special election, the AJC has an extensive profile on the District 42 Georgia Senate race in this morning’s paper.

In summation, Jason Carter has a lot of money (thanks to donors from both inside and outside the state of Georgia) and he’s got name recognition. Main challenger Tom Stubbs asserts that Carter has bigger political aspirations beyond District 42 and questions Carter’s long-term focus on his district.  Both being Democrats, there seem to be few items of policy on which the two candidates disagree.

Only 8,000-9,000 folks are expected to turn out and vote in this Tuesday’s special election, which makes it unpredictable, even with Carter’s substantial monetary advantage.

P.S.  Another article in the AJC a couple days back about this race made another interesting observation.  The person elected to this post will never serve in the legislature during this current term, since it ends this year. So in accuality, District 42 candidates are running to have the word “incumbent” notated after their name on the November ballot.  Interesting.

Disclosure: Both Stubbs and Carter are currently DM sponsors

Flyer Smears Jason Carter; Tom Stubbs Condemns It

    Decatur Metro | May 7, 2010

Creative Loafing has the scoop on a flyer that’s been making the rounds around the Toco Hills area – and posted this morning on Peach Pundit –  showing a picture of Yasser Arafat with three other guys (none of which are Carter), and asserting that 70% of District 42 candldate Jason Carter’s campaign funds come from outside the district and 40% from outside the state.  It also mentions a $9,600 donation made by someone named Amir Emami (also not in the deceiving flyer, according to Carter), who lives in Hong Kong.

CL reports that Carter and his campaign have responded, calling the flyer “completely erroneous and wrong” and provided facts to dispute both the claim that Emami gave $9,600 (he gave the legal max of $4,800) and that 40% of Carter’s contributers are based outside the state. (They have it at more like 27%.)

Carter’s opponent Tom Stubbs has also condemned the note on Peach Pundit and released his own press release calling for the State Ethics Comittee to investigate the flyer. Stubbs release can be read at the bottom of the CL article.
