Skateraid at East Decatur Station This Sunday!

Decatur Metro | September 23, 2011

Details!  More here.

SkaterAid, a skateboarding, music and art festival, returns for a seventh year to Decatur this coming fall. The festival is unique in that it caters directly to teens. The festival features ramps, jumps and contests for skateboarders as well as demonstrations by professional skaters. Music is provided by teen bands from area high schools. A skateboard deck art auction is held throughout the day, with a selection of eye-popping art created by professional and “outsider” artists from used skateboard decks. All proceeds generated by the event are donated to families who are battling pediatric brain cancer. The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 from 2-7 p.m. at East Decatur Station, a business complex just west of the Avondale MARTA station at 109 New Street, Decatur, Georgia.

SkaterAid was started in 2005 to celebrate the life of Ian Wochatz, a Decatur teen and avid skateboarder who succumbed to brain cancer on July 4, 2005 at age 15. The event has now grown to become a tradition in the community. Several area businesses have pitched in to support SkaterAid, such as the Brick Store Pub in Decatur square, which provides food and beverages for the event and displays the skateboard art for several weeks prior to SkaterAid. Stratosphere Skate Shop in Little Five Points provides ramps, decks and prizes for the event as well as publicity and oversight of the skating portion of the event.

Skateraid Looking for Volunteers

Decatur Metro | July 22, 2011

Cathy writes in…

The 7th annual SkaterAid 2011 Skate & Music Festival will be held on 9/25/11 (Sunday) 2:00p – 7:00pm at East Decatur Station to raise funds for the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children and honor the life of Ian Wochatz.   This is the first call for volunteers.  I am looking for volunteers to help out in many areas with this great Decatur event.    We have an early shift (2p-4:30p) and a late shift (4:30p-7p), but also some earlier and later times for set-up and break-down., as well as other areas that would involve assisting in the art auction.      Please contact Cathy Keeler at for a volunteer shift.

Please visit our website:  http://www.skateraid.net  and join the SkaterAid fan page on FaceBook!

“SkaterAid” This Sunday at East Decatur Station

Decatur Metro | September 21, 2009

SkaterAid launched in 2005 as a way to commemorate the life of Decatur teen, Ian Wochatz, who died of brain cancer earlier in the year.  Now still going strong in its fourth year, the event annually raises money to help families who are affected by pediatric cancer.

Aside from a full day of skateboarding at East Decatur Station this coming Sunday, this year’s event will feature a Skateboard Deck Art Silent Auction (art is currently on display at the Brick Store Pub), an “old-time photobooth”, a full schedule of bands, a scavenger hunt and raffle.

Here’s some shredding action from last year to help get you in the mood…
